Cold weather

Basenji Talk

  • both our basenjis stay out during the day when we are at work…they have a nice dog house and the weather here is not real harsh....has anybody used a dog house heater or something similiar?

  • I have not, but I'm weary leaving dogs outside at night, because my parents' dogs have gotten out of the gate a few times.

When I move to AZ, I am going to be looking at the solar powered dog house fans for the dog houses for when Medjai has to be outside for a few hours during the day without me.

  • We're in Atlanta too and our dogs are definitely inside the majority of the time with it being in the 40's and all.
They are only in the yard for as long as it takes to chase away all the critters and do their business.
We have still been taking them to the dog park if it's sunny but we usually always bring their fleeces/coats, just in case. Riley never stops moving when he's at the park, which is why I've never seen signs from him that he's cold. Zip starts shivering when it hits 60 degrees and doesn't run around at the park much unless the mood strikes so she's often pretty bundled up.

Have you considered having them inside and crated?

  • I'm assuming the dog house is in a outdoor kennel – the neighbor has an outside dog (golden retriever) even here in the Minnesota winter and she has the kennel protected from the wind by a tarp and the inside lined with straw bales. You might try that (the bales) - but to be honest I wouldn't leave my basenji outside unattended for such long periods of time.

  • I would worry someone would take them, or throw something in the yard that would make them sick.
My dogs are inside with access to a doggie door…mostly, they are on the bed when we are at work.

  • Ditto what Sharron said – one time while cleaning the yard in the fall, I found a poison-filled ant trap in the corner (farthest point from any building so it must have been tossed in by the jerky neighbor) and I'll tell you I was just petrified. Luckily EL D hadn't found it.

  • Completely unrelated, but while I have your attention…

WHERE THE HECK YA BEEN HIDING!?!

The member "Andrew" and I have been trying since June to plan dog park play dates with Atlanta basenji people. How close are you to Dunwoody? Do you "do" dog parks?

Would be fun to get together :)

I know that frustration! Training with high value treats helps. Sanji loves salmon.

@B5004EVER , sounds familiar! Yes, they do like to make themselves comfy at your expense. One of mine liked to sleep horizontal across the bed, leaving my husband and me to cling to the edges, as you describe. Another caused us to almost die.....laughing. The covers were pushed up, and when we moved them we discovered her sleeping on her back, legs in the air, little butt right next to our heads! Hysterical! But most of the time our Basenjis were trouble free sleeping companions, although on occasion they did snore....

B's don't like rain but even in Holland there is always a dry spell to walk them. When it's cold, they wear coats, if it is wamere and it rains, the wear raincoats. It works fine! Enjoy!

Kelli…I think you're right about the altered gait...I worried about that as well just because of how both my b's walk with just a coat or sweater on, so I've never tried booties. Obviously they are uncomfortable with clothing, so consequently I stopped trying to get them to wear them for that very reason...I was afraid they would learn to walk differently. I even went so far as to have $150 custom sweater knit (with hand painted yarn) for Ruby that was made specifically to all her measurements. Looks cute & fits her to a "t", but she won't walk in it. Good thing I didn't opt for the cashmere. I'm thinking I'll donate it to Pam & Sheila...maybe it can go home with one of Ruby's grand kids. It would look stunning on a black & white b because it is so colourful. Oh, and I will say, that the kids LOVE it when I put Musher's Secret on their paws...they act like they are getting a spa treatment.:D Brando even lets out contented sighs while I'm rubbing it in. :D Anyway, I know my b's and I KNOW that the boots would be torn to shreds in about 2 seconds...given how they've tried to get the coat/sweater when they are on.

Mine want to sleep on long, rainy days…..like today. Once they have their first potty of the day and realize it's a downpour day, their whole demeanor changes, and it's a slow-moving, sleepy day all day.

LOL That's what Bella does!!! Alternating leg lifts!! We got five inches of snow last night and then freezing rain on top of that. So I take her out this morning and she steps on TOP of the snow - and then CRUNCH! she drops down into the snow… each step she does this... step, crunch, drop... step, crunch, drop. Poor thing just looks at me like "Mom, how do you expect me to go potty in THIS!" Finally she does squat (bum literally touching the frozen snow) and makes yellow snow. I honestly feel sorry for her, I sure wouldn't want to go potty out there!! Brrrrrr!!!:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(
