  • Hi everyone. This is my first post and I want to introduce myself and my basenji. Diesel is an 11 month old male who I've had since he was 16 weeks old. I'm in the process of getting a divorce and left my female Carlee with my husband. I am a homecare hospice nurse and visit patients in their homes every day. Diesel is a typical basenji puppy-mischievious and fun loving but he sure can get into trouble!!! We are looking forward to reading all the information here in the community. Have a great day.

  • Welcome. I just wanted you to know (as you've already discovered) Basenji=trouble.

  • Quite true. We call our pup Trouble On Four Feet.
Welcome computerguru! I also have a boy pup around the same age. Still waiting for him to start using his head…Were those two your first B's or have you been in the breed for awhile?

  • Welcome to the pack - you'll find lots of great information here. And feel free to share you stories of beastie antics.

  • Welcome to the forum! Please post some pics of your boy :)

  • Welcome!

    Yes Pics!!!!!!

No I have had basenjis for approximately 22 years. He is different though than any other I have had. He still bites even when I have taught him "no bite" and he is beginning to not be friendly to anyone but me. I have never experienced this with any of my others-even the 2 that were rescues. Amy thoughts? thanks

  • I am sure some of the others on this list can give you ideas.
Did you discuss this behavior with his breeder?
    Maybe they can help???

  • Do you think he may be reacting to the big change in his family - the loss of both your ex and his basenj companion?

@Mr: First, let me say 'welcome' to you Pedro. Then I have to tell you that not all pure blood B's have black noses, our little gitl, Bitty, has a dudley nose, dark brown and pink. Our second dog, an adoptee from BRAT (Basenji Rescue And Transportstion) was listed as a Basenji mix but I was totally convinced that he was all B, he had all the physical traits, tight curled tail, pointed nose and stand up ears. His chest is white as is your Neymar's with the white collar. All B's have 4 white feet and the tip of their tails are normally white. As you mentioned he has the normal wrinkles. Taking all of these points as a group your Neymar has all except fro the tail, which in my estimation would make Neymar at about 90% B. So, again, let me say welcome to another new Basenji lover. Thanks, I'm glad that you agree ! I'm getting a pure B now to be Neymar's companion, a black and white female ! I made a thread about her on "Show of your dog" section ! As she grows up i'll manage to even more tell the differences or similarities :)

Welcome to the Forum. It sounds as though this 'protectiveness' has been going on a long time. I agree that probably it would be best to get help from a behaviorist but make sure that they have experience of Basenjis. In the meantime keep him away from your guests. It's possible that he's stirred up by the excitement so it's best to try to keep him calm when people are around.

Thanks, I am very lucky to have her, she's so sweet with such a loving nature. But she does like to hunt, and last night roughed up a little oposson in the back yard. It did get away, with my help. Do other Basenji's like to herd? When Zoe went to a dog run in St Pete, she ran all the dogs to a tree, and kept them there as long as they would put up with it. It was hillarious!

@tahj1024: I have found links the the Basenji Club of America and a list of breeders. The closest one is about 4 hours away. I do see a number with a local area code listed as a rescue resource so I think I will give him a call to see if I can see some and spend a little time with a few. I really would like to raise a puppy but I would be open to getting one that is a year or 2 if I find the right one. Wonderful news!!!!
