Never clean your bathroom before giving a Basenji a bath. You'll be sorry.

In most cases I would say that is a true statement, unless we are talking about my late Maggii… she was such a show dog... she loved the show ring... when I retired her for showing and she would see me taking towels out for baths... I would find her in the tub, waiting for her bath!!! While she didn't love the bath part, she knew it was part of showing.... and she loved to strut her stuff in the Breed ring....

  • Neat story Pat, first I have heard of a b going to the bath without trama!

  • I second Sharron's statement. wow.

  • Rally will hop into the kiddie pool at lure trials on command and stand while I get her wet to cool her off. She also will come into the shower if the slider isn't closed all the way and stand on the "dry" side and try to lick the water off you.

  • Zaire likes to be in the tub when I am taking a shower. We have a pretty large bathtub, so she can fit in the tub with me and keep away from the water.
I don't let her in often, because heaven help me if the shower head gets bumped in my carelessness to wash myself. The second she gets water falling on her in the tub she tries to climb onto my shoulders (Not a pleasant experience with no clothes for her to claw at) :D

  • Never try and do the Whoopie with the dogs loose and the bedroom door open:o

@Elscodobermann: Tilly does the same trick. Only she smacks poor old Humphrey dobermann on the head repeatedly if he is (in her opinion) closer to the fire than her - and only stops when he moves… Good job she wasnt around to try it with some of my previous dobes - we would have had basenji mince... Maya does that too! Except we dont have the luxury of a nice fire (i miss that! ) so its usually when someone is sat where she wants to be, or if she has scoffed her chews down too quickly and decided she wants someone elses, that sort of thing. The labradors just give into her but Delilah the pug is very much top dog (noones told Maya that though lol) and has put Maya in her place on more than one occassion! Thank god for Lilah, i'd actually have to TRAIN the basenji if it wasnt for her

Charlies_Mommy: OMG I'd have to agree that what you said about tail docking is absolutely HORRID. Thankfully they don't use that practice anymore. Now here's my tibit. I do have a boxer and they dock the tails at a very young age 3-5 days old, so that's not something the average pet owner can normally avoid. I have met MANY boxers with tails living her in Germany so I like them either way, however those tails HURT like h*ll when they smack you, almost worst than a lab tail, they have nothing to slow them down, and anyone who's met an excited boxer knows the butt is a wiggling, lol. One of the reason that dogs still have their tails docked today is because of injury from smacking into everything. And my over all opinion is yes I do like it, but I really don't like the longer show docks on boxers, dobies etc Now on to the ears. I am a 50/50 sort of person when it comes to cropped ears. I cannot stand the short "fight cut" that is on pitties, staffies, etc or even worse with italian mastiffs and dogos where they cut all the ear off. I also tend to not like the long slender show cuts on boxer, dobies and danes. It also very much is about the dog and if they have the right head for a crop. I seriously picky about cropping ears, even though I like it it has to be thr right crop for the dog. And as for dogs lie white or checked boxers I believe they should NEVER have their ears cropped it just looks ugly. Also there are some dogs that look much better with cropped versus floppy. I'll post pictures later of what I feel is an ideal cut for a dog and what I think is ugly.

Caesar started doing this around 4yrs old, or I started noticing it then….the chewing licking air after dinner for a while? I massage his jaw at the back and it loosens the food. He was officially ready for a teeth cleaning (big bucks) at age 5 and probably had that problem all of his life. Teeth were all fine. Now, after dinner, he comes to me to rub the back area of his jaw to get the food out. He must feel a real difference now that his teeth are clean. I dont ever stick my fingers inside his mouth, just rub the outside and it is good enough. I feed Caesar Innova Evo and Natural Balance Duck and Potato back and forth.

We take our kids as many places as we can… hiking swimming running/jogging- nature trails parks doggie events (like ours!! www.firstgiving.org/bdawg) I've taken Lexi to do lure coursing a few years ago- it was fun, but she wasn't as in to it as I thought she might be; our dobie was FAR superior! lol

Yonae12, I see that you live in Florida now. Are the animals you mentioned in Florida or Sydney? I guess there are possums around these parts, but haven't seen them alive for a long time!
