  • Hi, I'm Icey (don't ask)
I think I adopted a Basenji a year ago and didn't know it..still not even sure, but he has most of the characteristics..he's a mutt..but I've been reading here and trying to learn what I can. When we adopted him we were told he was a shepherd husky mix…i'm thinking not...Please take a look at him and tell me what you think.

    Meet Mr. Sultan...

  • He looks like a B Mix to me not sure what other mixes he has in him

  • He sure looks like a Shepherd to me more than anything. He is super cute. :)

  • He's very cute! What sorts of B-characteristics does he have? Does he bark much?

  • He is very cute, how tall is he?

  • His characteristics…mostly I think the cat-like qualities, the perching on the back of my sofa and staring out the window, the constant cleaning himself. He's chewing on everything, such as gnawing on the blankets, pillows, the light cord, cell phone, he ate a hole in the carpet..he's sneaky..two of us in the bathroom one day getting ready, we put everything, so we though up, and yet somehow he got ahold of the good mascara...I've almost trained my children that they wanted the dog, it's their job to put their stuff away or it's fair game..he's extremely curious..hates the rain..I read somewhere where a Basenji will try to get their way by nudging you with their nose, Sultan does this all the time...and I will plead my ignorance, This is the first dog we've ever had of our own...I'm not sure if these characteristcs match others as well...just had two people tell me he looks and behaves like a B.

About measuring him...do you measure from the ground to the top of their head or the back? Okay..stop laughing..it's okay..I plea ignorant...I've never done this

  • Icey, welcome to this forum and the world of basenji ownership I sometimes refer to as Basenji hell!! He looks B. to me!!! It sounds like he acts like a B. too!!

Good thing is he found you and you found us!!

To paraphrase an old adage, If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it must be ….a Basenji:eek:

Hope you find all the training needs and advice here that you seeK

  • Those are definitely basenji traits! Could be a b-husky mix…b's are happy to "mix". Welcome, love to see the photos and hear stories.

  • I think he's got B in him, too. He looks like he could be Magnum's brotha by anotha motha!

Very cute! Welcome to the forum!

  • Welcome to the forum! He is so cute!! Where are you in Ohio? I'm near Cleveland and I have a B mix and a B..

I am about 20-25 minutes from downtown Cleveland. Are you going to be in downtown cleveland or around cleveland? I am to the east. What days will you be here? I would be happy to do a meet-up! You can email me at lpd7 at hotmail dot com

  • Wow…I'm in lyndhurst..what is BRAT and what is the other thing you do?

  • BRAT is Basenji Rescue and Transport (www.basenjirescue.org)). Its a national basenji rescue, I'm sure if you search this forum you will find people talking about them. I think they are a great organization and I love volunteering for them. They have volunteers that screen and do home visits for potential adopters, evaluate basenjis coming into rescue, foster, transport B's to new homes, etc. If you want to help they can always use more volunteers, just check out their website!

If you might want to have a meet-up with the dogs you can email me at lpd7 at hotmail dot com.. we can give eachother more details about our dogs and see if we think they would like to play! you can click the link for pics of my B mix http://www.basenjiforums.com/showthread.php?t=1937

  • its okay to email you then? I have some questions

Thanks, I will pickup some SAM-E at the store today, I had no idea what dose! I hope Pete has a comfortable time with you, you are doing everything to keep him happy. My friend's mastif-dobie mix has very high liver enzymes, she is 10 and otherwise looks great. She is slowing down, sleeps a lot but has good appetite, etc., he opted for no more tests (at her age, he would not put her through any treatments other than meds). She loved the liver-cleansing diet, is back on regular now and taking Sam-e; like you, he is just hoping for some good quality time with an older beloved dog. Hugs to Pete!

Luzambo, I too had one pass last March. After that I was left with one and said once he passed, I was going to be done with dogs – too much of work and emotional strain. Yep, I was going to be free to... well, to do something. Then I found a little girl related to Brie just 2 weeks later and 6 months later I have yet another. Yes, they're a lot of work at times, but so is most everything in life. I love having them around and the house would be often boring otherwise. I'm sure Pharaoh and my Brie are hanging out in their private club looking down on us saying "what are you guys doing down there?" And with a signature like yours, I don't think you'll be waiting long. Welcome to the forum!
