Basenji Talk

  • I'm not sure if this has been addressed anywhere but I really need help understanding the lingo on this forum.
    What does the following mean:
    IMO
    BCOA
    BYB
    DH
    WI

    Any other abbreviations you can think of please post.
    Thanks!

  • Umm. I know a few:
    IMO = In my opinion
    BCOA = Basenji Club of America
    BYB = Back Yard Breeder
    DH = Dear Husband

  • The WI was just what it seems - Wisconsin (if that came from the young breeding thread)

  • Umm… I think a few of us, at least 2, need to use DP.

    DP= Dear Partner :)

  • @mauigirl:

    Sho nuff :)

    then there is the DD or DS that some use for the kiddies (non fur type)

    and of course there is IMHO for those of us that think we have a humble opinoin. :) wow their are allot of crazy abbreviations we all use aren't their. :D

  • Most of these are used "world wide on the web"

    PM - Puppy Mill
    IMO - In my opinion (same as IMHO-without the "humble"..gggg)
    SO - Significant Other
    LOL - Laugh out Loud
    ASFA - American Sighthound Field Asso
    AKC - American Kennel Club
    BCONC - Basenji Club of Northern California

  • sigot or SO= significant other
    LP= life partner

    I think I have used LMAS= laugh my a$$ off and
    IMHO= in my humble opinion

    As I understand it, the 'D' as in DH can also be darn or damn, depending in the context and the posters state of mind:p (ie….after first posting "damn neighbor", any following references are merely stated as DN)

    ROFLMAO = Rolling On The Floor Laughing My A$$ Off
    AFAIK = As Far As I Know
    IDK = I Don't Know

    UKC = United Kennel Club
    CKC = Canadian Kennel Club (great club) or Continental Kennel Club (horrible club used mostly by disreputable breeders)
    OFA - Orthopedic Foundation for Animals
    HD - hip dysplasia

  • PPM = Persistent Pupillary Membrane
    FS = Fanconi Syndrome

  • why do some people put a series of G's? (gggg)?

    Tanza, I've always wondered what your "gggg" means…!

  • First Basenji's

  • PRA = Progressive Retinal Atrophy
    PPM = Persistent pupillary membrane
    CERF = Canine Eye Research Foundation
    PB = purebred
    Of course, there's always BOB, Best of Breed BOS Best Opposite Sex to BOB, WD and WB Winners Dog and Winners Bitch and BOW Best of Winners when reporting show wins (in the USA)

  • Houston

    I think "gggg" is like a growl sound….like your "mad"..like a dog..but I might be wrong.

    "gggg" is Big Grins, like VBG is Very Big Grin

  • Houston

    "gggg" is Big Grins, like VBG is Very Big Grin

    aaahhh..I get it..:)

  • LOL Pat glad you explained cause I thought just a bunch of grins but funny some thought you were growling!

    I use DH, but the first part isn't dear and the 2nd isn't husband. Hm… Richard Cerebellum covers it. Speaking of which, one day he came home from playing ball and said sadly... a DH here and a DH there today (he had left garbage can open so I wasn't happy when he walked in door after an hour of cleaning up trash and mopping). I looked confused... "Designated Hitter" he said sadly.

  • WTHAATI= "what the hell are all these initials?" I just made that up.:D

    @planetsaver said in Basenji for me or not ?: Will be a problem to leave him alone, let's say 10 days / month an average of 9 hours a day. Also I do not want to have to much trouble with the neighbours, but I understand he can make some noise sometimes, maybe he can be trained to stay alone and not to bark that much. Why would you even think about training a hunting hound to stay home alone ? I would never let my Basenjis alone for more than 4 hours, and even that is very rare. 3 hours is absolute maximum. Like @tanza, I have sold puppies into apartment environments as long as all other boxes ticked positive. Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

    @weedtrek Possibly Basenji mix, nose looks a bit wider and the eyes are less oval. Could well be a Basenji mix though.

    Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

    I read your blog and find it kind of confusing and ….. your comment about "messing with ..." hmmmmmmm.... Anyhow, yes, it is so cool when you come across another basenji, because they totally understand each other and how they want to play. We were fortunate once to have another basenji play chase with Kipawa at a dog park. I just don't think there are many basenjis in the Lower Mainland. :(

    My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!
