Hanna the Podengo

Off Topic

  • I have not posted in a while about Hanna the Portuguese Podengo Grande Smooth that lives in my house with the basenjis. I a couple of weeks - Buster (a male PPGS) will be joining us in the states.

Here are a couple of shots taken by Laurie Erickson.

  • Very cute. I love the Podengo, they are such a sweet dog. I have a couple friends in France who own the Medio sized ones. I have never seen a Grande in person. I have thought about them as a third dog in a couple years if I don't get another B or an Ibizan Hound. :) Thank you for sharing the photos.

  • Steph and Avery in WA also have some Medio's - seems like lots of folks w/ basenjis and Beezers seeme to also like this breed.

Expect to have puppies next summer - maybe.

Yes… spoken like a "true" breeder.... "maybe"................. :D

How are they to live with? Like Basenjis? Do they bark a lot? What do you like, what don't you like?

  • Well what is just hysterical is when the B's start howling and she want's to join in - she is deficient in that area but gives it a good shot.

Lots of similar B traits - play taunt is front down bottom up. She is FAST - really really fast. Seems more trainable - taught her to sit in about 5 min. Eager to please - SHE seems to like to be near you. You need a really good sense of humor.

SHE loves everyone human, animal, dog - That said you will note I have put SHE in all caps - since my experience is with one and most of the animals live in packs and aren't family pets - I think the jury is out.

Steph and Avery in the PNW have 3 Wire Mediums now - it's funny I did a judges ed with 2 of them in June and talked about them being reserved, aloof and wary of strangers - and they just wagged wiggled and loved up everyone.

When Hanna barks - it is piercing - she doesn't bark often - mostly for attention. I understand the small (Pequeno) does bark a lot. I think the hardest thing to get used to is with a basenji - you will sometimes get A Bark - it's the sustained that is startling.

  • For those who missed the whole why I'm doing this breed anway - I did post on my MIJOKR Basenjis page the why - I am spearheading a recovery and save the breed project for this specific size. As you might expect - I'm in it way deeper than I ever anticipated.

Dealing with breeders who just do things differently in the scope of communication and sharing information has been the most daunting task. Followed closely by the weak dollar - Anyone have a couple thousands of dollars to burn up - we will always take donations :)

Those sites were really interesting thanks for posting them. I've been following this since you first had us guess what breed you were importing. Nice to follow the progress! :)

Podengo temperament - first as I said before they have a softer temperament than basenjis - harsh corrections result in a dog that will melt into the ground. The Medio size (keeping in mind I do not live with this size) needs to be kept busy - they are active and appear to do well when there is some pretty physical exercise and brain activity for them. Lure coursing, agility, even rally can keep them happy and focused. A couple of foks are going to try them at fly ball. All sizes like to hunt and must always be behind a fence or on a leash. I find that the Grande (BIGS) are a bit more laid back. They love to run, they will catch bunnies and birds on the fly and in Portugal they run down boar and stag. Their preference appears to be investigating their enviroment for any changes and sleeping on the couch. If you think of primitive hounds of the Mediteranian Basin - you get what a Podengo looks like and how they are. Similar to Ibizan, Pharoh Hound, Cirneci, basenjis etc. The little size - pequeno is a breed apart - it is smaller 8-12 inches and is not a bred down big it is longer than tall and is a rabbit hunter in thick brush. I'm in, too. Some are wire haired and others are smooth like a Basenji? Interesting breed.

@dmcarty: I typically only breed when I have some good home lined up as well. But when I started to investigate the breed - there were 19 Podengo Grande Smooth registered in the world. So I started the project to see what we in the US could do to increase the numbers and to motivate those breeders in Portugal to register their dogs. We are starting to see some success and never in my wildest dreams did I think I would have 11 puppies. I do have some homes and some will go to different parts of the US for breeders of other size Podengo to show off, I have a few that are staying by me and a friend has offered to take in a couple to continue socializing when I have to go back to school in the fall. Once they get their shots and I can get them out and about - I think I will see some interest. My good friend Wendy (Harehill Hounds) has been very helpful in building some interest in the Beezer community as well. It really sounds that you know what you are doing, so everything will turn out fine , I am sure about that! meanwhile you can show us loads of pictures of the bunch :D

They really are beautiful puppies. You have done a great job with them that was lot of puppies to care for at one time. I do so wish I could have one but we want another Basenji at one point and I could not have it then. Makes me sad as my husband will tell you I have this fit called I want what I want when I want it. Must be why Jaycee and I get along so well we act to much a like. Ha! Ha! I am sure you will get great homes for your babies. Rita Jean
