If You Like Pina Coladas…

Basenji Talk
  • …and getting caught in the rain, then you're not a Basenji. :)

Against our better judgement, the wife and I decided to take She-Ra on a quick walk in her favorite park. There were clouds on the horizon, but we live in a weird part of the desert where you can see the clouds from a distance and watch them completely skirt your entire community. It's fun to watch the lightning and a cool night in Arizona is something you take advantage of when it happens.

Naturally the storm hit big time JUST as we got to the shelter area. I mean this rain was POUNDING on the roof and we hid in the men's bathroom for the worst of it, which was fun for the dog because there's all kind of stuff to check out in there.

Finally it got to the point where it was just showering...so we stepped out to get a look at it. I think it was the first time she'd really seen that much water pouring down and been out IN it. The look on her face was a cross between "Wow, this is neat!" and "Daddy, make it stop now."

The real fun was running back to the car through the rain at the low point in the rain. We got home just in time for the next gullywasher. We watched that one from the safety of the patio. She-Ra actually went out to check it out up close...so we may have a water-dog on our hands if we're not careful.
    :)

  • What part of AZ? We visit in late Feb to early march in Tucson. I've been to tucson when the monsoons hit in july/august so I'm quite familair with Az rain storms.

Blaze does it, too, as did Maxx before him. It does tend to freak people out who are not dog savvy or who know nothing about Basenji's because they think he's waiting to attack their dog. We try to reassure the other person that, no, Blaze isn't going to attack their dog…it's just something Basenji's do. Some people aren't convinced, though...we had one person in the RV park where we spend the winter go so far as to pick up his dog everytime they saw us coming. That dog, who started out being friendly, turned into a barking, growling dog everytime we'd walk by. Some people simply shouldn't be allowed to have dogs! ;)

LOL, my husband got me a magnet with a basenji with a remote in it's mouth. Very cute! But ouch, that pup needs a nail trimming!

Paxton hates the water. He dreads going out in the rain. However, when we go to the park and the local labs are playing in the left over puddles, he has the time of his life in the water. He just loves it! We also fostered 2 other basenjis whom never seemed to mind the rain. The most recent was kept as an outside dog before the original family gave him up. That might have had something to do with it. It didn't matter if it was hot and dry, or pouring down rain turn to snow, he was just as happy to trot around outside.
  • Ew Zip! why would you want to smell like that?!?!?!?!?!

uggh reminds me of my parents dog. Lady, in her younger years, would take cat poo out of the litter box and eat/roll in it. outside she would do the same with random poo on the ground. just be glad you didnt have to clean up the carpet too! lol:p

Hi Quercus! Tano's breeder was Maripat Webber of Etukon. I believe both her siblings went on to be show dogs. Tano took after her mom as far as coloring…being the only red and white of the litter. ^_^ I'll push up Tano's appointment for her physical and request the full thyroid thing. If this is all related to thyroid I definitely want to get it looked into asap! Thank you for pointing out that it could all be related! She really develops a thick woolly undercoat in the fall/winter. You'd think the house wasn't near 70 degrees all winter! If her hair was a little longer I could possibly clean it up and felt with it--she sheds that much! :D
