Changing to EVO a question and concern

Basenji Feeding
  • What was the protein source of their last food?

Mine are all eating a red meat formula right now. I also found that my one girl seems to better on red meats and duck rather than foods that are primarily turkey or chicken. Some chicken and/or turkey is fine but she does better if they are not the primary protein source.

  • Mine are all eating the red meat also…. and I have not had any problems with stools...

And yes, heat and exercise can have an effect on stools, at least in my experience.

  • Jack always takes a really loose, runny poop at the end of a walk.

And now I feel weird, so that is all I will say about poop :-)

Why??? :D Isn't that what dog people talk about…. and how excited we get when we take them out to pee and poop and they do?... :D

  • We made the switch from Blue Buffalo to Evo Red Meat in a matter of a couple days– and we did not have any stool issues. They are pretty solid. Try the red meat and see if that helps your pooches at all.

  • I am really pleased with the red meat EVO…..

LOL! I know, I know- I just feel weird! :D

  • We have always used the chicken EVO, mixed with a bit of regular Innova. On the EVO alone, they have very soft stools, and the mix firms it up a little, but it is still soft. I think next bag (in another month) I may switch to red meat EVO, thanks for the recommendations!

  • We are very fortunate to have the advice of the pet food store owner we deal with, who happens to have a Master's degree in animal nutrition. He gave us red meat sample bags to last us a few days while we changed the pooches over and watched their stools. We are getting more solid stools today, so he had us bring back our chicken and turkey based product for full credit, and sold us a small bag of Red Meat EVO. We will continue to watch their stools over the next couple of days.

The weather here has been in upper 80's the last few days with very high humidity. I am sure the temps, along with the 6 miles we do daily has had some effect on their stools.

Oh by the way, if all goes well for us tomorrow, we will finally get Roo in the sailboat while its in the water and we sail in a distance race.

  • I just switched from EVO to Orijen– and guess what... they're now picking out all the Orijen and leaving the EVO!! Crazy!!

For those who have asked if I am keeping a puppy, the final answer is no. The reason, you might ask?…. In 2000 I placed a puppy bitch with a great home.. we showed her to her Dual Championship and Ann (Mom) showed/trained her to her Obedience and Rally titles.. it is a home to die for.... A week and 1/2 ago, we lost Crystal to unexpected kidney failure. Mom, Ann made the hard decision that life was not good for her and let her go over the Rainbow Bridge. Ann still has Kobey that we co-own and he has been really missing his older house sister, so I offered Ann my pick puppy. She has decided to accept and take her home. I could not be more pleased.... as Ann and her family are my family and the best of friends. As you all know, I have two bitches that get along like bread and butter or as another friend put it, Peas and Carrots! While I was set to keep a puppy, I did worry that 3 is a crowd and I do not and do not want to have "packs"... we all live together... as a family... so my fear in keeping a puppy was that I would break up the bond between C-Me and Franie... now that problem doesn't exist. We will visit with or Ann will come up her every weekend.. and hopefully they will all continue to bond and be friends and the boy dog, Kobey too, but I don't have much fear about the boy dog... (not always the case with Mom's and bitches when they are not in the same house).... So all the homes have been decided... the exact placement of the pups will be decided tomorrow after we grade the litter, but I am pretty sure who is going where.... will soon announce on the my website who is going where!

I feed twice a day. When Lola was a puppy, she would eat so fast she would throw up at every single meal. I bought a bowl with little dividers in it that forced her to eat slowly. She immediately stopped throwing up. She had to use that bowl for over a year before she learned to pace herself, and now she can finally use a regular bowl without throwing up.

I would highly recommend the fish oil. As I stated before in a previous post, I put Zak on a grain free diet and added fish oil pills daily and a Cosequin DS (glucosamine & chondroitin) capsule sprinkled on his food each day for arthritis and he has not had a problem with arthritis since. There are foods with these supplements included, however, it is my understanding that they are just sprayed on the food. My vet had in the past suggested for my senior dogs at least 1000mg fish oil daily for cognitive health and the arthritis. For Zak and some early kidney disease he is showing she is recommending, and I have also read on line, 100mg fish oil per 10 lbs. of body weight (2500 mg daily). I don't think you're going to find the best level of fish oil supplement in a kibble. Oh, and his coat this year is sooooooooo soft! :)

@snorky998: Thank you, Andrew. How's Shango been? Still the adorable host at the shop? He's doing GREAT. He's still managing things at the bakery just fine though day after day he just glares up at me after a pup leaves the store- he wants another dog to play with so badly! LOL

@AndrewnShango: …A similar situation happened not long ago with the food brand "Canidae" and many, many dogs had digestive issues due to the change in recipe. I urge you to contact them if there are issues... I'm glad you mentioned this, because Canidae was my other favorite brand…

There is also a low fat EVO that is meat and fruit, no grains… I have been slowly changing mine to it and they are doing great... but until you have the intestinal issues under control, I would keep him on that if that is what your Vet is recommending. And for the skin you can get 3V Caps.. they are a great supplement
