    Hi everyone. My name is Virginia and I am owned by two lively Basenji's.
    The first is Gambit my BOY !! He is a tri and is 5 years old. He is from
    a breeder in Washington. And the love of my life.
    My second Basenji is Tipper she is a lovely red Brindle and she is also
    5 years old. She is my little Alpha dog and a real handful. :eek:
    We rescued her when she was 18 months old from a family who did
    not know much about Basenji's or just did not care. But she is in
    our home now and we love her a lot too. We have a few problems
    with her, every now and then but nothing that reading the BRAT
    cololum has not helped to cure. I also have a real great friend and mentor
    In Pocatello, Idaho , who has helped me immensely, with any and all questions when I needed it. I hope that everyone is as great on here.:)

    Who was the breeder you got your basenji from…maybe I know them.
    Welcome.
    I have 2 b's at my home as well, one brindle boy and one r/w girl.
    Aren't they just a joy...when they are good!

    @msjames, @tanza did you a solid favor outlining expectations. Networking really is key to finding a "reputable" breeder. Most show their dogs and are connected to other breeders through showing. They all seem to know who is planning a litter and who isn't. I completely agree with Pat that you should meet your breeder in person prior to the puppies even being born. You can learn a lot. Is a Basenji right for you? If you want a dog to hang with you in the driveway with the garage door open as you chat with neighbors, or stand calmly with the front door open as you receive a UPS package... ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Basenjis will bolt. they'll be gone in a second. They see it. They chase it. And if you think you have them trained... no. They've trained you. When they see it they will chase it. Basenjis, in my experience, need exercise. Mine get two walks a day. When they don't, they can be destructive. They're not shy about expressing frustration or displeasure through chewing up your best stuff. A big secure yard can mitigate this, but that's not a guarantee. They love seeing outside, so keep your blinds and drapes open otherwise they may open them themselves even if that requires chewing through them. They will climb onto windowsills, tables and low counter tops. They are capable of scaling a six-foot fence. They are known to climb trees. These are extreme examples, but better to know now. They are super affectionate. They can be trained... to a point. They are clowns and provide endless entertainment. A Basenji baroo is the best sound ever! They love to snuggle and will sleep on your bed and under the spreads and sheets if you let them. They love to share body heat. Tail twitches when I return home are the best!

    I am new to Virginia, but not B's. My 11 yr old girl is the love of my life. In training I used lots of tools trying to out smart her. The funniest one was the singing bass. She would go potty in my all white dining room. No matter how I tried I couldn't stop her. I was a stay at home Mom too. I finally set up a singing bass on the floor. I set it on motion detection. When she would go there it would start singing a startle her….She could not figure it out. She quit doing it immediatly and also alerted me...I still laugh to this good day! I also put her leash on my belt for at least 30 minutes a day. She would go where I went. So now no matter where I go in the house, there she is. Each month I was fortunate to go to new Basenji puppy parties. There she could run with about 20+ B puppy's. Even a small dog park would have worked. I took her everywhere with me. I took food from her. So she would know I was the pack leader. I ate first. I would move her when sleeping and gently put her back. I just can't say enough about pack rules. I know other dog owners thought I was nuts. 11 years later I still am having to remind her daily who the real boss is. She is very well behaved and NEVER off her leash. I learned early on, no matter what. She will take off like a rocket if something gets her attention. One time it was a blowing leaf. That inclination will always be a part of the breed. I recommend crate training. I didn't let her sleep with me for quite some time. I learned that short consistant commands are clearer. A shaker can made of aluminum with pennies in it was better than my voice. They will use a short sided box with cedar shavings in it instead of the inside floor. when little. Mine loves raw veggies in the afternoon, Once older. I have used dry food for a long time. She rolls over, shakes, down stay, stand, off, in your chair (for car rides). All for the love of a treat. She enjoyed lure coursing. She enjoyed being shown. She loves my best friends yorkies but no other small dogs. You'll have so much fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What great companions they make......Yea! and Good Luck from one who is still trying to outsmart her!

    Welcome! I strongly agree that you should meet a B in person. They are very catlight in their movements, and Cyrus even grooms himself like a cat. Cyrus is very independent, but also very strong-willed. To further complicate matters, he is clever and good at gettting his own way. If you want a challenging yet loving breed, a B is a good choice. Once a B decides you are a worthwhile human being, they are very devoted but not in a needy way like some other breeds. Enjoy the forum!
