    I don't know her personally, her website is great! The only hesitation that I would have,if I was looking to hire her, is there is no mention of her training techniques, other than the school that she attended. And I am pretty sure that school is not mainly positive reinforcement based.

    If I were looking for a trainer, I would definitely want to talk more to her….hope that helps....

    I do not but from reading her article on How to Choose a Trainer where she describes her training philosophy. She doesn't sound like a trainer I would choose. She says she uses treat based training and then introduces correction based training.

    I have never been a fan of National K-9 here in Ohio. I would never reccomend that place to someone. It is more correction based.

    Just try and convince a trainer that doesn't do the "positive reward" or "treat based" training methods that their methods are not as effective.

    The guy who installed our underground fence has since gotten into dog training. He tried to sell me his services when I ordered a collar for Daisy last year. When I asked if his training methods were click and treat based, he said "behavior modification". When I tried to discuss the benefits of the positive reinfocement methods that helped me with Duke, he scoffed that dogs should learn without bribery! Well - I ended the chat since I knew we disagreed.

    A do it because I said so, won't work on a basenji and really shouldn't "work" on any other dog..
    We should have evolved beyond that.

    Yes, do it because I say so isn't good teaching for any species and yet there are many humans that still do it with many species they interact with.

    And that is when you just "agree" to disagree and know that is one person you will never use…...

    to earn a JC you run a two JC trials, which are just a single run, by yourself. You could run Sat and Sun and potentially earn a JC. Running JC is a good way to learn.

    @Shaye's: We took our B to PetSmart and the basic puppy training they give you is very good - for anything advanced you would have to go to more classes, but they do continue on for a couple more. The important thing is to follow up and be consistent. And the most important part of training is the bond between you and the pup. We have had some difficulties with ours because we are not always consistent, and my DH and I disagree on training. Be sure everyone in your home is on the same page. Petsmart training can be hit-or-miss, so like everything else, go watch a class and make sure the class you are signing up with is the trainer you watched. Some trainers are better than others.

    I worked on Kipawa's training yesterday at the dog park, where there were many distractions. His recall is excellent there, but that may be because he just needs to feel his mom is close by? Then when he gets to me I make him sit, then he gets a treat. In the house it is a little different. Recall is about 60% right now, but sit is very good - about 80%.

    This weekend is the NLCC in Cat spring, next weekend is in Decatur but its a terrrible field. My dogs got totally shreded there on the cut cotton plants growing there so we won't be back. They usually have events in Dec at Cat springs and Waller, but were overcome by othere events this yr so the clubs all combined events at the beginning of the month instead. There will be coursing at Hutto the first and last weekend in March. McKinney has an event scheduled for Jan that we will attend with our 4 if the weather is good enought to make the 8 hour drive. We will mostly be doing events in north TX this yr vs going to the Houston area. Just too expensive to drive 12 hours each way when there are enough events closer to home. 90% of the events are AKC now, the clubs have stopped doing ASFA for the most part as entries were so low.

    @agilebasenji: So perhaps he wasn't shredding his bedding because he was stressed. He was probably shredding it because it's fun! :cool: Apparently, it is fun! Mine doesn't take the bedding out the door of the crate, she prefers to pull it through the wires and drags the crate halfway across the room. I'm picking my battles with her as she has had a rough life. When I say "No.." my girl gives me that wrinkled forehead look as if to say, "whatever…" and goes off to find something else that is entertaining.
