Cry Baby!

Behavioral Issues
  • Since adopting Shilagh in December she has been wonderful. Now that the weather is getting nice we have opened the windows and doors. This is driving Shi absolutely crazy. She is crying and whining and pacing uncontrollably. I can only suppose she smells all the new things in the spring air. I can't continue closing the doors and windows. What should I do?

  • Irish Basenjis, I love it.

How is she after a long long walk? Our guys used to have similar responses as the weather changed in Doylestown, but getting them out and "tired!" seemed to help.

Which of your pair is in the picture? Mick or Shilagh? Very handsome/cute.

  • I think more exercise is the key, also get her into a training class.
It will tire you both out.

  • You need to work on calming her – I've done this with mine by making sure I ignore the outside noises, yawning and sighing when there's noises, anything to show her that as alpha dog you choose to ignore the outside distractions and she will catch on -- it does take some time though. You might have her do some sit+reward or other behavior+reward to help her calm down when she hears the noises.

I agree. Restart your crate training using small increments of time but also work on this while you are home. That way she doesn't equate the crate with your leaving. The crate/kennel should be a place she wants to go to - feed her in there, put her there with her favorite toy while you are in the room doing something else, give her her treats in there, etc. In fact, give her a treat (or lots of praise) every time she goes in there on her own. Bring the crate into your bedroom at night (even if she doesn't sleepo in it. She should not feel it is a place of punishment but a place of safety and comfort.

Lovely photos, so glad your pack is accepting of the "new puppy". I feel that if you just expect basenjis to be good, they will be!

@Capt_Jack_our_Basenji: THANK!!! And OH YES time does fly…i dont want him to get bigger.... My first baby is 20. That's TWENTY YEARS OLD!!! How the blazes did THAT happen? LOL. My last baby will be 9 –NINE!!!!! -- in a couple of weeks. Yikes! I know people always say, "enjoy them while they're young; they grow up before you know it", which is true, but there's no way to really appreciate that fact until it's too late! You are so busy with the day to day, you just don't notice that suddenly your infant is packing to move out! But there is so much fun to come! By this time next year, he'll be walking!! and beginning to talk!!! THAT is so much fun! You DO want those fun days to come also. But I know these infancy days are so special -- so snuggly and warm. {and tiring! ;) } I understand there's a part of you that would love it to last forever.
