Basenji boy in GA needs new home

  • Robyn, I would agree with you on your opinion… and that said, even dogs that finish their championship are not and should not be bred, IMO.... My male finished, never used... one of my girls finished, never used... another one of my boy's finished, collected but not used... every dog has their faults..

And totally agree with Robyn that one of the biggest faults we have today is the front end of the dog. Too many are way to straight in the shoulder and therefore hinders the front movement. So as breeders we take the best of what we have and breed to the best we can find to help resolve those problems...

To carry Robyn's comments a bit further, her line goes from moderate shoulders to straight... (and I am not picking on Robyn's dogs just expanding on her comments) so for her, to pick the best assembly and look for a match that not only has a good front, but is known to reproduce that front is what I am sure she is wanting to do.

The other fault I see way to much is low tail set and no "shelf". I have that problem in my line also.. Maggii was the "queen" of low tail set... (meaning it sits way to far back on the butt).. but she did have a good shelf. From Doreen's description of shelf:
"The tail is set very high and placed right on top of the hindquarters with the buttock curving out considerably beyond the root of the tail. This gives a strong reachy appearance to the hindquarters and is referred to as the "shelf".

Another thing I have seen too much of recently is a round eye instead of almond shaped...

All that said, I can forgive many things, but in the end, I am a "head" hunter... regardless how nice the dog/bitch is... I have a problem if they do not have a pleasing head.

  • One more comment about conformation…. another thing that really gets to me is that I want a dog to look like a dog and a bitch to look like a bitch...

There are too many doggy bitches and bitchy dogs.... I don't want to have to check the "plumbing" to see what the sex is.... ggg

    Hahahaha. Famous words…

  • Hello

Wondering if he's still available. I'm looking to be adopted by one ;) Let me know.

    Emily

  • Yes, Rocky is available. E-mail me if you would like to chat about him. :)

  • Yes, Pat, I would agree with you about the Bitchy Dogs and Doggy Bitches. It seems there are a lot more of them in recent years also. And to find something decent, I'm finding myself now looking at older dogs to breed with.

  • I always try to find older dogs to breed to… and if not old themselves, at least their sire/dam and grandparents have age on them.. I don't like seeing dogs with a pedigree that the oldest is 5yrs old in the 3rd generation

  • I wasn't sure of your e-mail address. I'm curious about talking to different breeders, and possibly getting on a waiting list?

  • I am not yodeldogs but her email is posted in the very first post of this thread along with all the details about Rocky.

  • Oh I'm sorry. I wasn't meaning that for you, but thank you very much!

  • Rocky left for his new home last Saturday and I am pleased to announce that things are going well. He lives about a half hour from me with two fabulous men who adore him. Rocky gets to be the center of attention with plenty of long walks and lots of playtime. He even gets to sleep in the bed now. :D

I'm never in a hurry to place a dog….the right home will eventually came along.....and this is Rocky's right home. :)

  • How great for both you and Rocky! Did you give them info about this forum so they can meet and greet with Rocky's kin and friends? You're on a roll - Rocky has found a good home and you got the good news about Baron. Might be a good day to pick 6 lucky numbers and get a lottery ticket. :D :D :D

They found the forum and it led them to me. I really hope they choose to participate here though. Guys, are you reading this? Don't be bashful, come join the fun!

  • AND come to our basenji meet-ups on Saturdays at 11am! Pinckneyville Park in Norcross. We'd love to see you there.

I also want to throw out there…. Pickneyville is fairly convenient for us, but I'm sure both YodelDogs & Maui live closer to other parks... so if y'all ever want us to swing over to your area to meet up at any good parks you find, we don't mind doing some driving, too.

Edit: I didn't mean to highjack this thread. Sorry.

  • oopss. wrong post. :P

  • I wish Rocky was closer to Maryland so we could meet! kiro would love a new brother :(

  • Rocky is already in a new home. :)

@jodymp another post you sent stated you were in Yorkshire... so, are you looking for a pup in Europe? Do you have a specific region, or a distance range where you are focusing your search?

I live in San Francisco and I'm very interested in adopting a Basenji! Could you please contact me and give me more information …. i have had numerous basenjis .. starting out with my two RAMSES and NUBIA they had pups .. and although they were not planned pregnacies .. went to very good homes.. I still have some contact with one family .....that bought two of our pups ... My beloved Leeloo and MAx died last year ..... and I'm sooo in need of having the pitter patter of Basenji feet run around in my empty house... Aldo Villalta 415-587-5010

Great that you are going to visit and seeing her basenjis first hand. That's one thing I admire about Jean - she is going to do what is best for her dogs and it is great that she is so straight forward - she wants it to work out for the dog and the person adopting. She may know of other breeders that have adults available - ask her when you visit with her - if you still think that basenjis are right for you. They aren't for everyone - my friends constantly ask me - you like these dogs why? hahaha And just so you know and so you won't think it is uncommon, I have 3 that I would say would need a basenji experienced person, my 4th (which is Jean's boy, Ozzy), would probably be the perfect dog for anyone - he's almost an impostor because he is such an easy basenji - but I deserve him after my other three. ;)

Hi, I talked to my daughter last night and she really does not want me to find him another home, even though he's making her sick, (she's allergic to him). She threatened to leave home if I did. She's 18 so she could. I guess we will try and keep him. The good news is I did find a place that will pick up and drop off dogs, take them for long walks in the woods, and let them play with other dogs for the day. All for just $17.00 a day. So at least he's not in a crate for 9 hours any more and he seems to really enjoy it. He runs to the person right away and is excited to go and comes back very happy and tired.
