I used Wisdom Panel for my assumed Basenji mix. It showed no basenji at all. My boy is 32 lbs and short hair. His DNA says he is 25% American Eskimo 12.5% Boston Terrier 12.5% Chow Chow 12.5% German Shepherd 12.5% Miniature Schnauzer 25% Breed Group-Sporting, Herding, Hound, Terrier. Having owned basenjis all my life I would say my boy has basenji in him by his personality and behavior regardless of what his dna says!!
Newwww dog!!

Remember that the general accepted schedule for shots now is 3yrs after the 1st year. This is for all shots…
So if she was vaccinated at 1yr of age, then she should be on a 3yr schedule.
You might want to read the thread on Titers.Pat- My vet does shots every year (I've had both my dogs less than a year so both have gotten shots once from me/BRAT so far) so if I want to do them on a 3yr year schedule, do I just tell my vet thats what I want?
I feel like the vet tech/vet will argue with me if I say thats what I want.. anyone else have this problem with their vet?

That is exactly what you do tell them what you want.. you are the client… and you are paying.... just seach the internet for all the information on revised vaccinations schedules and 90% of the Vets are using that now...
If they argue with you, find a new Vet... just my opinion....

I love my vet, he doesn't think he "knows" it all.
When I brought my first basenji into him, this was about 100 yr ago we both learned what we needed to do to keep them well.
When my beloved Spike, came down with fanconis, it was so new to both of us, my vet called UC Davis to find out what we needed to do.
THAT is the kind of vet you need..one who works with you and listens when you say, "this dogs not acting right", without patting you on the head and sending you away with an expensive pill. -

i was wondering what kind of gate you had up that kept the other two out? i would love something really tall so fen couldnt leap over it.
-
its a summer infant x-TALL lol we got ours at target.com. they have white and black and it comes with extenders for larger doors. we have two actually, a white one blocks off our upstairs because we dont use the two bedrooms up there!
dan put some A&D on maggies ears, btw, and they are starting to look better. shes playing better with the dogs, and shes not having accidents really in the house anymore, surprisingly! we've been taking her on walks, trying to get that leg, and her, some exercise. but in the day we've had her its like a completely new dog.
-
I'm so excited you were able to rescue the little girl from that poor situation. She will definitely live the good life with you all and have the companionship of your other two. Congrats! And keep us posted.
No worries on the ears– Miles had it MUCH worse than that when we first rescued him. We put Neosporin on them every night. Sometimes little chunks of his fur would crumble off in little black chunks. But they eventually healed up and are flawless now.
Way to go!! You are awesome!

You might want to read the thread on Titers.on the printout receipt from the vet it tells you when each shot is due.. she needed her distemper shot in July of 2007 and rabies in February of this year.. so she hasnt had shots for quite some time. she did go to the vet in january.. idk why they didnt give her the one shot then, but we know she went bc the poo test isnt needed till jan. 2009 and they do that annually.
-
I agree with all that's been said. And a big thanks to you to be so willing to take her in (what a sweety she is).
-
If she has had a distemper booster after 1 year of age, I would not be too concerned about getting it boostered right away. Since she has been through so much, I would be careful not to stress out her immune system anymore than necessary.
If she is in need of her Rabies, get that done and make sure you keep the vet record with your name on the Rabies Certificate because that will help you establish ownership if it ever becomes an issue. Also, since she had such a huge infestation of ticks when you brought her home, make sure you talk to your vet about testing for Lyme and Erlichia since both are tick borne and if caught and treated early have much a much better prognosis. Any other vaccinations should not be done for at 3 weeks after the rabies vaccination to avoid stressing her immune system.
-
What an absolutly beautifull girl. So glad that you and the BF stepped in to help her out.

when the vet tech heard about the ticks she suggested testing for lymes. i think of the 30 or so we found 3 were deer ticks.
-
Not really a bad idea… I know that Lymes is pretty common in many parts of the country

Alot of vets around here require yearly vaccines even if the vaccine is good for two or three years. If your going to have Diego boarded anytime soon it may be difficult to find a kennel that will accept a boarder who hasn't had their vaccines updated yearly and sometimes bordetella done every six months. Since we occasionally board the dogs when we are out of town I go ahead and get theirs done yearly but I usually have someone stay with the cats rather than board them so I do theirs less often. That might make a difference on how often you vaccinate.
If the vet tech argues with you just ask them what the manufacturer recommends.

She's so sweet! Nice pics!

My poor Jack got Lyme bc his last owner left him outside perminatly and he was covered in ticks when he gave him to the pound…it flares up sometimes but the meds work great with him. What makes the ears black exactly?? Never seen that before...THANKS And Congrats!
-
Black ears usually indicates prolonged exposure to cold weather. sad.
-
Oh…yes sad. Thank you
-
Here's a pic of Miles's ears the day we rescued him. Poor little ham.
And after I tried cleaning them with mild soap and water…
A couple months later…Getting better!!
And here's after almost a year…the ears healed with neosporin.
Now THAT'S a happy Ham!!

You might actually have an argument that the ex abandoned Maggie. She was left at her mother's house, where the mother said the ex never was. The mother was going to take her to the pound, another sign that she was not under the control and care of the ex. Also, Maggie was obviously neglected, adding to the argument that the ex abandoned her. There is no way that I would give her back. Make sure you document all of the veterinary care that you are providing. Whose name is Maggie registered in?
