    I've been reading the post on bs on heat, our chilli is i think on her 3rd week now. apparently there was a white pea size thing that came out of her this morning. is this normal? and what on earth is it? She didn't seem to bothered by it, she cleaned it away and was gone.. thought i'm still wondering at what it is???

    It could be mucous? But I can never recall any of my girls passing anything like that. You might contact a reproductive vet to ask about that. Here in the US, a lot of regular practice vets don't know all that much about the practical workings of the reproductive cycle in bitches; reproduction is kind of a specialty here now. I don't know if things are the same down under…but I would definitely check around about the white object that she passed.

    How old is she...?

    Jazzy had two heat cycles a year, one in the Spring and one in the Fall, starting at age 5.5 mos or so, for the two years prior to being spayed.

    I was really disappointed, :p , that she didn't read the Basenji manual!

    Several of my girls have had years where they had two seasons. It seems like the more females we have, the less we have multiple seasons. And they don't always seem to be six months apart either….

    Hmmm, that would make sense in the wild, I suppose. If there are fewer females, they'd need an additional heat season to continue to reproduce at
    a rate that would maintain the pack. Or maybe not. :rolleyes:

    Jazzy's heats were not 6 mos apart. Like I said, she was Spring and Fall.
    She'd go maybe May/August-September. I don't recall exactly, but they were pretty close.

    And many of them that have spring seasons are in a false season too. I had that happen with Mickii, many bitches will have a "puppy" season 4 to 6 months after whelping, Maggii did and Mickii followed her in, we tried to bred Mickii that spring and it was a false season. She came back in October and was bred.

    @zande - That is so true Zande, when you have a pack of bitches, the one "low" on the totem pole may be the last to come in heat in many cases... "want a be's" many times will come in first... depends on the pack.

    We have had two seasons in the pack, very often. This has given us more than a fair share of summer litters. Basically, when one girl comes in, they all do. Sometimes its only a token dribble in sympathy from a bitch whose 'normal' ovulation is counter to that of the other ladies. One bitch, born in September, only ever actually ovulated and could be bred in the Spring although she apparently had a sympathy season with the others in Autumn. They kept her company in Spring but matings were not successful for them at 'her' time. I wouldn't worry but it never hurts to call on the vet if you are ever worried about anything.

    I hate to disagree with your breeder, but I'm with Sally. I cannot come up with any reason to sedate to test fertility issues. Sure, if she was showing signs of pain, pyometra, something obvious. But risking anesthesia makes no sense. I really would ask her what she is thinking is wrong that would justify sedating.

    @Buddys: all those male dogs at your front door! I mentioned to my brother who is a first time girl puppy owner, and he laughed when I told him to look out for the male dogs. The other day, a blind dog who never goes outside ended up sniffing at his front door from down the street!!!! talk about a sex drive! Exactly, most people do not believe you when you tell them that male dogs will do most anything to get at a bitch in season. Years ago when I had 3 bitches in season at one time, there was a very old in-tact Lab that lived 4 blocks away… He had to be at least 14. But as soon as the girls were "ripe" and ready, there he would be walking back and forth in front of the house.... never saw that dog any other time

    I REALLY wanted the plaque vaccine to pan out. When it came out, my vets (who are cautious) said to wait a couple of years. Well, it has been found safe, but they discontinued it as it doesn't work. I really need a miracle. Though the truth is, she is good about it now and heck, I spent more time grooming the chow 2x a week than I do brushing her teeth every night. I still have to get them cleaned every 3 mos though. My vet recommended trying a water pik. ROFLMAO, me and what army? Sigh. So we just keep getting them cleaned.     Just a word about pyo….the ones that are the most deadly are called a 'closed pyometra'...meaning the infection is sealed in the uterus...nothing comes out..the dog just crashes. When their is fluid leaking you can catch it, and treat it. I think it is unlikely that Jazzy has a pyo, because her activity, and appetite are still relatively normal. A lot of bitches change a little during estrous...some get more crabby, some more clingy. Then when the added change of bringing in a boy, I would imagine she is just subdued :)
