Basenji nightmare at dog training

Basenji Talk
  • I take Kip (my basenji) to dog training every thursday but because there is a huge waiting list they were trying to move people up to from intermediate (my class) to advanced. For the advanced class you need to work of the lead! dun dun dun!!!

So I let him off the lead and he walked to heal perfectly until he noticed some people at the front with a puppy and he ran of wanting fuss and trying to play with the puppy and when I got near him he ran off to the agility stuff and ran round and round in circles through the tunnel!

I was stood there calling him and just thinking "I think I might have failed :p"

Who said Basenji's weren't exactly the smartest of all dogs :p

Hey, at least he was having a good time! Or at least it sounds like it to me

  • When you get a bunch of dogs together, that's pretty low on the "nightmare meter", but I'm sure it was embarrassing:p …....

ha! I was thinking that too! When I read the title, I envisioned the B eating the puppy ;)

  • I saw a basenji going agility in Seattle, off lead, and the dog did great, until it caught the scent of the ice cream a little girl was eating ring side.
The owner just had to laugh and shake it off.
    Our b's…got to love them!

  • Even after only 3 months of living with our Itty Bitty Basenji I am very sure that the first time she will ever go anywhere off lead she will be so elderly and infirm she will she will have to be taken out in a baby stroller. Otherwise she will find some new way of outwitting me, again.

  • Sounds like the dog was bored with the obedience and wants to do agility. (whispering It's more fun anyway.)

  • hmmm not so bad. Blaze not only did that to me, but to the instructor. She got so fed up, she had her big beefy boyfriend try to man handle Blaze into a sit. Blaze bit him. Thats when we failed…
He enjoys leashless times at the farm, but only when the sheep are penned up... we learnt that the hard way. Oh... and he can not go past a fresh sheep patty without rolling in it.... blech!

  • My husband has to remember not to go open the back of the minivan before Rio finishes her last her practice during agility class because when she gets to the dog walk she is likely to take off for her crate.

I`m gonna take him to agility soon but I thought having a bit of control would be good first :)

Sounds like you just don't want to be embarassed. (And yea, a little bit of control is good, but I'd encourage you to do things with your dog on the right side of you as well as the left. Dogs that have lots of OB are hard to get off the heel side.)

  • I have been taking Mica to a "rally-1" obedience training at the novice level. This involves doing sit, down, 360/270/turns, left turn, right turn, walk slow, walk normal or fast, weave inbetween cones, and she likes it as a challenge to do things alot of it is at the "heeling" side and than there is front and around the back to the side, too - But I think she will be going to an agility class someday - she likes to balance on and walk for 10-12 feet on logs in the water by the swamp, and also across the dried river beds in the woods, and run through the culvert at the dog park. She has also jumped through a hoop at the dog park. It seems to challenge her. She likes to be kept active.

@eeeefarm said in Is my dog a Basenji mix?: Genetics is such an interesting subject! And the most understandable book on the subject is Mary Lou Kenworthy's ! Recommended to everyone if it is still available.

My mix is just a little shorter, and there's a similar thread going on here right now. As I say in that one, only DNA can tell you. https://basenjiforums.com/topic/14838/i-know-you-are-tired-of-being-asked/5 -Joanne

@mvdperez We run the air all the time, keeping it under 70. It's cooling off some so he's fine. She is under the covers because we keep it cold. He goes out early morning, quick midday, then longer in the evening. We keep his coat stripped down. I have no idea if it will get cold enough to get a winter coat. It's not generally COLD here.

Yes Aglie, I remember meeting you and Dig, Jet and family! Dig thought the basenjis were all ruffians, but Jet joined them in a huge wet puddle. Funny about tris liking other tris, we have noticed that occasionally at the park, the reds will all be lying together and the tris will all be together as well. Silly dogs!

I stayed in a neighbourhood with plenty of dogs. My Bs are anti dogs. They are prone to aggressive behaviour because they want to be the Queen Bitches. I thought they were just anti JRT and Big dogs. Now it seems they are anti everybody….sigh......
