Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Since Medjai has so many relatives on this list I thought I would mention that his being an Affected means that his parents must be at least Carriers.

For those who want to submit their dog's sample for testing the Canine Phenome Project website is, http://www.caninephenome.org You must register you dog with the CPP prior to requesting the test. You can also print submission forms with directions on how to submit blood to the U of MO from this website.

  • Sorry to hear that, very sad

  • Yes, especially because he does have so many relatives on here. Thank you for pointing that out to the rest of the people.

  • @etzbseder:

Well, I got the results back yesterday, and they say that Medjai is "PROBABLY AFFECTED WITH FANCONI SYNDROME". So, now I get about one more year of little worry before I start strip testing and waiting for the inevitable.

I am really sorry Michael. I know what high hopes you had for Medjai. With a little luck, maybe he won't experience kidney changes until very late in life, and will respond well to the protocol.

  • very sorry to hear this! [HUGS]. Jackpot is Medjai's half brother (share the same dam) & we are getting ready to do the Fanconi test next month…so I'm worried that we'll hear the same thing since it is likely...(given what I remember about Mendelian genetics principles). Only time & the test will tell.

But I'm very sorry that you got disappointing test results. :(

I am again sorry to read this, but I did have a questions (please excuse my ignorance as I am just fully jumping into learning about basenjis) but because you found out now, why are you waiting about a year to begin the strip testing? I think I understand the point that they don't normally show signs until a certain age, but wouldn't it be better to start now?

You can start anytime, but since it is pretty known that the earliest that a Basenji will start to spill sugar in the urine is 2, it is pretty much a waste of the strips and money and you really would not learn anything….. (and the earliest I have ever heard was 2 1/2 yrs), But this can serve as a reminder that when you do start testing, one a month for 3 to 4 days in a row gives you a better chance at catching Fanconi really early...

But we all hope here that Medjai doesn't have any kidney changes for a long, long time....

  • **I am so sorry Michael….
I am keeping my fingers crossed that Medjai will never become
symptomatic or not until he is old old old.
Make sure you start striping at 2.
If you catch it early and put him on the protocol, he can live
    a long healthy life.

I am living with a fanconi dog right now and he didn't start
spilling sugar until he was almost 6.
    He is 8.5 now.
He's been doing real well on the protocol.
The only down fall is he drinks and pees A WHOLE BUNCH.**

  • I do know of a private fanconis site that handles b's that are actively showing signs of this awful illness.
I am not sure if they take "pre" fanconis basenji's or not, but I will ask.
    Hugs.
Its hard to hear this news, but remember, YOU basenji doesn't know what is coming..just that it is happy today.
    Hugs again.

Jazzy is probably affected also, and her mother has Fanconi, which developed shortly AFTER Jazzy's litter was born:( and just two years too soon for the test.

So, I strip test, and I wait, and I worry, but I also am hopeful – the test results do not mean that they WILL develop Fanconi; they mean a high probability.

Focus on today... you may have YEARS of great health ahead with Medjai, in fact you may well have a lifetime of great health.
    Try to stay positive!

    Sharron,
They do not…. only affecteds at this point.... many had asked when this test became available

  • It's ok, I plan on keeping Medjai anyway. There is good news to this, and that's that this if the first I've seen in awhile of a dog getting the test showing affected. That means most of the breeders are doing a GREAT job of breeding for the good of the breed.

Well at least here.. if you go to the OFA site there are many, many affected Basenjis… but on the whole breeders (responsible ones) did pretty good with the information they had... but if you look at the many, many different kennels with so many Carriers.. if we didn't get a test, in the next 5 yrs we would have been over run with affecteds... IMO And those are from people that are considered responsible breeders... lets out all the other people breeding without testing and not knowing the bloodlines behind the dogs or keeping records on offspring...

  • I will add one more thing here… if your dog is tested as affected, it is really to their benefit to spay/neuter asap.... there is no good reason to keep them in-tact... as you will never want to breed them... or if there was, it would only be males and them you should collect and freeze... there is stress on an in-tact dog/bitch... and the sooner you can make their life as stress free on their systems as possible.. the better chance they have at staying healthy for as long as possible...

  • Best of luck to you and Medjai.

  • One thing you might consider to do with Madjai, sooner then later is a complete Thyroid panel…. as many B's with Fanconi do have low Thyroids... and if maybe you know that early and can begin to supplement.. it might make a difference long term.

Much of treatment now that we have a DNA test is new to the entire breed..

Hang in there. It is a tough road ahead. neither you nor your dog will understand the changes that can happen so suddenly… but know that it is not with malicious intent that they pee and pee and pee. There are so many supporting groups and people out there to help you and your B thru this. You can have a good life even with this sentence hanging over you.

Best of luck. Enjoy your B as they are today... don't worry about tomorrow. I'll keep you and your Medjai in my thoughts.

@tuts - Hello tuts, note that the test recommend by OFA comes from the Basenji Club of America as recommended tests and for OFA this will determine if done that Basenji will get a CHIC rating. Note however this does not mean that they were clear, just means that they were tested. Some are test that need to be done yearly. Breed parent clubs for all breeds determine what tests need to be done

@tanza: Debra, I think the comment about age (puppies under a year) can not be counted as accurate yet is because Fanconi is late onset, so if they were to develope Fanconi, it would not be know now. But not sure if that is what you are asking? I think I said clearly his results are seemingly about TESTING results, not actual development. So his results are accurate for TESTING, which is what he was posting, which has nothing to do with the age of the animal tested but only if it shows expected outcomes based on the sire/dam. Age only has to do with outcome, not what his chart/results were about (ie if the linkage test results for sire/dam match what the offspring linkage test RESULT (not if they actually develop the disease)). Not sure how to make that clearer.

I know that quality breeders will keep the lines as strong as possible while making sure the pups are not affected. Really, that is all anyone can ask.

Great news.. I had Kobey's blood done at the Nationals and I know that it arrived and they cashed my check… so just waiting for the results... He will be either Clear or Carrier, since his sire is Clear, Dam is a Carrier.... His two litter sisters did come back Clear.....
