Success At The Dog Park

    Well Sunday was the day! My daughter and I got up early and took Trixie to our local dog park. Which is not so local for me but took us about 30 minutes to get there. TRIXIE LOVED IT!!!! She was so good and had a smile on her little face the entire time. Our dog park has two sections, one for small dogs and one for large dogs. We started out in the small dog section, I was a nervous wreck! I heard her make her devil noises a couple times and everyone there was looking at her like she was posessed or something. I had to explain that she was a Basenji and the noises she makes are a little different. She never got agressive with any of the smaller dogs but the dog park for big dogs was bigger so Kelsey and I took her over to it. She acted so much better with the bigger dogs (her sister at home weighs about 82 pounds so she is used to a bigger dog) she ran and played with all of the dogs for about 2 hours. It was a sucess. The only thing I did not care for was there were some little girls running around trying to pick up all of the dogs and when they ran up to Trixie I told them not to pick her up. Some adults looked at me strange but I don't care, I just did not want Trixie to do something and I would have never allowed my kids to run round picking up strange dogs!! All in all she was great, we will be going every weekend from now on!

    Congratulations on a successful outing!
    I want to take EL D to one but I'm a little nervous as he's a bit dog-aggressive. I thought if I went early on a Saturday when there would only be a few other dogs maybe he'd be okay about it. Then I could gradually work him into it. I'll wait until spring gets here though.
    I took my previous beastie and he was fine with the other dogs as long as they didn't "gang up" on him, even if in fun. We would leave if the big labs came out as they were just too nutso.

    Believe me I was so nervous because Trixie also has a tendacy to be dominant!! That was one of the reasons we went over to the big dog park. She was better over there! All in all she only made the devil noises when several dogs would surround her so I can't really blame her! We wanted to get there earlier so there would not be so many dogs but we got lost! All in all she did better than we expected!

    Basenjis often do best in the big dog section, (they are big dogs in small bodies) as long as the big dogs are nice. Glad you had such a good time, it is a joy to watch them run, and best of all…..a tired basenji is a GOOD basenji.

    One park we go to has a rule, no children under 8!

    In your position, where you really have to take her out a lot, I understand. And I hope her comfort continues. My point was it is situational need, not dog need to be that social. :) I have a slim chance of that having worked with my current 2, but with my incredibly dog aggressive first one, I'd have been out in a basket muzzle and warning everyone to keep their dogs away.

    Well, I went to the dog park again. It was actually kinda boring. Only one other guy there with 2 little, shaved white dogs. He was not talkative at all and after the initial sniff, the dogs pretty much ignored on another. It was kinda hot (90 degrees) + humid + around dinner time so I wasn't really surprised. I was gonna leave when I, with the sun in my eyes, saw someone showing up with a dog with a curly tail and pointy ears. I thought, "OMG, is that a basenji, can't leave now." Turns out it was a Shiba-Inu. Cute dog. I thought, "Hey, maybe we'll get something here, playwise." No such luck, again, ignoring after the initial sniff. Oh well, it still made a tired basenji, which is good. I will go back again. Oh, and DolceMomma, this park also separates small and large. But the "large" dog area is so-o much nicer than the small dog area. First time, we started in the "small" dog area, alone, five minutes, went into the "large" dog area, 'cause that's where everyone else was. I just think this is a good way for my boy to get socialized. But I am/will be vigilant.

    She-Ra goes to our local park at least twice a week. It's a nice area with a sectioned-off area for smaller dogs or if a dog is having "behavior issues" you can take it in there if there's no other dogs. A lot of "regulars" maintain law and order if a dog owner is getting out of line (allowing their dog to bully, etc.). She enjoys it. Runs in to do her business really quick. Sniffs everyone, but hates it when other sniff her. There'll be the occasional "give me space" growl if too many dogs get around her at once and sniff. Spends most of the time sniffing and standing in the middle of the park staring like a statue at something. Then you get the eventual chase going - those are always fun because the other owners are like 'Oh, She-Ra's gonna get caught!' and I grin and say 'No she's not.' as she runs circles around all the other dogs. I love watching my dog run…it's poetry in motion. After about an hour she's pooped and ready to go back home. We've had very few incidents with her that haven't been swiftly fixed. She seems to enjoy going quite a bit, and we're making friends with some of the regulars...I guess we're fairly regular now by this point as well.

    When Cairo was coming into his manhood which was around the later part of his 4th month he began to try to dominate every dog (male or female) at the dog part. We were in the smaller dog pen, so there were plenty of smaller dogs for him to dominate. I recognized the behavior (not full mounted, but the arm on the back) and we didnt go back until he was fixed. Major difference. I would suggest going to a Petsmart and doing your normal commands there. It is so busy and loud there that you can practice getting his attention. Having an intact dog at the dog park is a big challenge. You dont want to take treats into a dog park in case some one else's dog is food aggressive and you have to feel confident you can pull his attention away from his interest when you want. I would think any kind of training that included socializing with other dogs would be a big help.
