Stop the humping!

Behavioral Issues
  • Lenny (intact) won't stop humping Tayda (spayed)!!!!!! He's never done this before today! He is 2 years old and has never humped Tayda ever until today. In fact, Tayda sometimes humps him (which is hilarious, by the way). Poor little Tayda, he won't leave her alone. He just spent about 5 minutes chewing on her ears and nibbling on her leg.

I guess its that time of the year!? Does Tayda give off pharamones even though she's spayed?

  • Someone in your neighborhood may be in heat, and Tayda is reaping the "benefit". If it bothers her too much, she may teach him that humping=pain!

  • Wow, sorry, don't know how that happened! Hope this response doesn't repeat that way.

  • Also, if there is a change that Tayda might have a bladder or urinary infection, even a little, males will mistake that as being in season… and also that is correct, if there is a bitch in the area, he may be picking up on it... you would be amazed how far away they can be and in-tact males will pick up the scent. This is NOT typically Basenji breeding season, that is the Fall

  • We did go to the dog park on tuesday and Lenny did seem particularly wound up that day. Maybe there was a female around that was in heat. I suppose they shouldn't have been at the dog park if that was the case, but who knows. I know there was at least one other intact male there at the same time we were there. Surprisingly, they did not mess with each other.

Poor little Tayda - always has to watch her back! Literally! ha ha.

@Saving so nice to hear there's other people with the same problem! We have been giving regular baths to our b, so I don't know if that really helped or not. Anyways, it took a while for me to bring Nova again to the dog park, because I was a bit afraid the same situation would happen again. I was there a couple of days ago, and no one tried to hump her. (I must say all dogs had same age approx.) Thank you for your comment replies! :)

In my opinion puppy humping is just a natural thing - lambs do it too. Yes it may be a dominance issue, I'm not sure. They usually grow out of it if and irt's quite easy to gently discourage them but above all don't make an issue of it.

@rheidt: No I do not feed her in her crate, mainly because her crate is located in the basement and she would not have access to it at all times. I do walk her when weather permits, she won't walk if it's too cold, as of late the sub zero temperatures have made it next to impossible to walk her. And when I do walk, it is for around 40 minutes. Hi Rheidt, I was reading all of your posts about your basenji's crate and anxiety problems. Did you ever get things resolved? If so, kinds of things did you do that worked?

She-Ra's no fan of the rain, that's for sure. We use pee-pads and these past few days we've gone through quite a few (had a pretty rainy spell), but if we go out with her she's usually okay.
