Basenji bought from Mo puppymiller going out of business

Basenji Rescue
  • This is the news I recieved today:)

    MO auction results

Tonya and Walt Ahrens were able to buy all 6 basenjis sold at auction today. I have fosters for some, but not all of them. There are four females and two males. We also are getting four young female basenjis from IA in the next week so foster homes are in short supply in the Midwest. If you have ever wanted to try fostering, Tonya reports that these basenjis are easy to handle, not skittish or frightened, most are young, and all appear healthy. All of them will be vetted in MO before transporting. BURs are being planned for next week and weekend.

Transport volunteers from southern MO to Mattoon, IL (Wed, Thurs, or Fri next week), and from Mattoon, IL to Columbus, OH on Saturday are needed.

If you can't foster or transport, but would like to help, donations are certainly appreciated.

    =====
Really, we do so badly need basenji smart foster homes.
If you can open your home and heart up to one of these dogs, it will make a whole new life for them.
Expenses will be paid for anyone who take in a BRAT foster.
Talk to your family and see if maybe you can take on one of these dogs.

  • Do we know WHO went out of business?

  • we are willing to foster and have also emailed Liz Newton back about the South Dakota mill closure. I haven't heard back though. We are also willing to transport

  • I know Liz is very busy and will be getting back to you when she can.
Their is a seperate site for folks who want to talk/help these dogs.
A Yahoo list has been set up to expediate communication.

Do we know WHO went out of business?

It was/is a PM in N.Dakota.. he has an ad on puppyfind.com 24 Basenjis, 2500.00 for the lot of them

  • So…there are separate purchases N (South? I thought!) Dakota...and then also MO...and then more from IA?

Millers must be having a really hard time selling Bs if they are dumping them this young and fertile! Yay!!

  • Don't Yay - too soon Andrea - if we 'buy' them they are making a sale.

  • Understood…but at least they are selling their breeding stock (young breeding stock)..not puppies to the market. That would make me believe they are finding basenjis unprofitable.

I get that paying for a dog makes a market, but I also see the logic in getting these dogs out of the 'system'.

Sorry, my error, couldn't remember if north or south.. I don't know of any others

  • Pat your correct, that is the ad that got BRAT involved.
Thanks so for posting this info.

And in this one case, this person is going out of business and selling all the Basenjis… by taking them "off" the market... at least they are not adding to the PM population... that said, too bad there are still so many around and add to the Back Yard Breeders...

Awww. Such a cute little girl. I think that we would be a good foster for a dog like her, or one of the FL dogs. We have experience working with pathologically shy dogs. We have an already established relationship with a great local trainer, and with a veterinary behaviorist. We have 3 dogs here to help with the socialization. But we have 3 dogs, and a fourth coming within the year. I'm afraid my heart is bigger than what we can really handle. I'm also afraid because there is no guarantee she will be adopted. If I knew it was short-term, and she could go to another place after a few months of work, I would be much more inclined to jump at the chance to foster. But, with the cats we foster, one has been here a year (tomorrow will be a year actually), and another we finally gave in and adopted after 2 years of swearing we wouldn't. The "normal" cats get adopted quickly (we have had about 10 go through our house, with the longest staying 6 mos.), but the behavior cases that need socialization and desensitization/counter conditioning work tend to stay. We have only had 2 foster dogs, and they were great and found great homes, but we are running out of friends to convince to adopt dogs. :) -Nicole

@BasenjiDiva: Wow, Vicki. Although we are down in Savannah, we also have a place up between Young Harris and Hiawassee. Maybe we could meet up sometime. Don't know how our little female hellion would do with your female though. Our male would probably be okay. Also would love to hear more about your petsitting business that you mentioned. When we are up there we would sometimes like to be able to leave for awhile without worrying about the beasties. Pat Hello - Yes, I would love to meet you when you visit your vacation home. razzcinn at aol dot com. I have two female Basenjis that are doing well together, but I, too, would be concerned about another female Basenji. Monday, I'm interviewing a retired older lady who pet sits and she will stay in the home all day and night, if needed. I need a dependable sitter, too. I often babysit for people who would like to go to dinner and get away w/o worrying about their pets. If I can't help you, I'm certain I can recommend several other dependable sitters.
