Dumb laws

Basenji Talk

  • One of my coworkers pointed out this site that lists dumb laws from different states and cities (http://www.dumblaws.com/).

Here are a few dog related ones just from California:

    State of California:

Animals are banned from mating publicly within 1,500 feet of a tavern, school, or place of worship.

    Belvedere:

City Council order reads: “No dog shall be in a public place without its master on a leash.

    Cathedral City:

One may not bring their dog to school. (We actually did this here in our town where it's not against the law - my daughters class was studying Africa, and the teacher thought it would be cool to bring in a real African breed of dog and talk about how they had adapted to their environment!)

    Glendale:

One may not take his dog on an elevator with him.

Los Angeles: (less strict than the rest of the state??)

It is a crime for dogs to mate within 500 yards of a church.

    Portola:

One may not allow his or her dog to chase a squirrel in the summer.

    San Jose:

It is illegal to have more than two cats or dogs.

    Shasta Lake:

One may not raffle off a dog as a gift in any public place.

  • While those are dumb, the worst is the laws they are trying to pass in so many states with Spay/neuter and breeding restrictions that will put a stop to all hobby breeders trying to improve the breed and raise healthy, happy, well adjusted puppies…

  • @gemurray:

    Portola:

One may not allow his or her dog to chase a squirrel in the summer.

So, I guess the winter months are okay for squirrel chasing then?

  • Although, I like the one about not raffling them off…...

  • lol thanks for the link, there are some pretty hilarious Florida laws in there, including it is Illeagal to sell your children! really? lol….
    and
Men may not be seen publicly in any kind of strapless gown

Hee, hee...this is where my sister lives....I am pretty sure her dog chases squirrels!

No, we probably SHOULD report her because she IS my sister ;)

  • Here's a stupid one from my homestate (Minnesota):
The land of 10,000 lakes declares mosquitos a public nuisance.

  • But I thought that the mosquito was the state bird! How can they dare declare the state bird a nuisance!

West Virginia's new 3 year rabies law will be effective 90 days (June 13) from the bill's passage on March 8 http://www.legis.state.wv.us/Bill_Status/bills_text.cfm?billdoc=HB4407 SUB ENR.htm&yr=2010&sesstype=RS&i=4407 . WV PET OWNERS CONCERNED ABOUT THE REMOVAL OF A MEDICAL EXEMPTION IN THE ORIGINAL HB4407 SHOULD CONTACT DR. KINDER AT THE NUMBERS AND E-MAIL ADDRESS (below) TO LET HIM KNOW HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THIS! Unfortunately, the legislature took the medical exemption clause out of the original bill filed by Del. Guthrie. The state's Public Health Veterinarian, Dr. Gary Kinder (304) 558-2214 Ext. 4640 Cell Phone: (304) 546-9560 or gkinder@ag.state.wv.us , e-mailed me that he and the Department of Agriculture would not oppose a bill changing the law to 3 years, but that they would oppose the inclusion of a medical exemption clause. The exemption clause filed in the original bill was removed. Rabies vaccines labeled instructions state that they are for healthy dogs and cats. There must be pets in West Virginia battling systemic cancers, hemolytic anemia, and other diseases for which rabies boosters could pose a life-threatening risk – Dr. Kinder should explain his position to West Virginia pet owners whose animals are or may be impacted by this amendment to the original bill.

Bart, This proposal from the local Muncie Delaware Humane Society is a real concern. Hopefully enough concerned Indiana pet owners will contact the Council and Commission to make a difference.

Just want to wish you a great time when you go to NYC!! That'll be a blast! Try not to worry and enjoy! It's so wonderful that you have a mother-in-law willing to help out. I'm sure she'll do a fine job with both of your boys. The worrying part is the naturally good mom in you. ;)
