Dog tag question..

Basenji Talk
  • meekas BRAT dog tag and rabies tag discolor her white fur on her neck(esp. notice when wet). Its not like the color of the tag is doing it, but the metal of the tag.. if that makes sense.. anyone have any suggestions on what i can do?? anyone else have this problem??

  • I don't have that problem but there are tag silencers that may do exactly what you need, plus keep the dog a little quieter when running around.

  • I have the slide on tags, although these would not work on the thicker collars or the martingale ones. I have not had a problem with the metal discoloring on them, if you do get a hanging tag make sure it's made out of a good metal like stainless steel. here is where I get mine and they usually arrive 2-3 days after I have placed my order! Also you can include their rabies ID # therefore you don't need 2 tags :)

  • I use pet tag silencers. They're called Quiet Spot.

  • The tags on mine didn't discolor his fur but wore away his fur. Now I only put the tag/collar on when my beastie goes for a walk and leave it off in the house. Would the silencers work for this scenario as well?

  • thanks everyone! i was searching for pet tag cover or case instead of silencer.. i think those will work well..

  • I would think they would, the Quiet Spot is a little nylon? pouch the tags slip into with velcro closures. I use them because the jingling drives me nuts, they have alot of tags.

  • Oh Michelle I like the tag website you gave us. I've been searching everywhere for a tag shaped like a football, since obviously Dallas was named after the Cowboys ;) But haven't been able to find one & Dallas gets his rabies shot this Thurs so I may just have to order one of these for his new collar that will fit the letters you gave me as well :) He's going to be a stylish pup. LOL.

  • These tags are a lot heavier than what most places sell but I am going to try them out for my dogs because the cheaper aluminum tags wear out too quickly and become unreadable.

how do you order on that site??

  • I think you have to find a store that sells them since they only take orders from stores but I have store right down the street from me that sells them. They are shipped to your home, just ordered at the store.

Here is an online store that sells them

  • Do you know how to find a store that sells them??

  • You can try the online store. I am not sure how you would find a local dealer since their website doesn't seem to have a search function though you could contact them directly.

  • clear nail polish?

  • Zip's main tag is from http://www.collartags.com. It's pretty heavy duty and I'm confident that it won't fall off. I got a lot of info to fit on there too. My only gripe is that I wish they took the measurement of the circumference of the dog's neck and made the tag bend accordingly. It doesn't quite follow the curve of her neck as well as I'd like. It is made to curve, but not enough. And there's NO way I'd ever be able to bend it further myself. It was like $8-$9. Stainless steel.

    clear nail polish?

good idea- i think i will try it!

  • Boomerang tags are very good quality.

I have the stainless steel, 4 lines on each side. They also have plastic, all have 100% guarantee, about $8 including shipping. We have been very satisfied with them. I even got one for myself, back when I was biking, with my name, docs name, etc and wore it around my neck, held a lot of info for $8 !

I use these also, best ones I've found, the stailess steel don't scratch like others do, when the others do you can't read what it says. The plastic ones are a good heavy duty and can be double sided. The hole for the ring is also reenforced so that part can't break

  • I use brass tags from Pettags.com They are about three inches long shaped like a bar. They fasten with brass brads to the collar; so they don't hang down at all. Each tag has our three phone #s (home and two cells). They have lasted for years since they don't bang against anything.

It makes me nervous when the tags are hanging down, as I have seen them get caught on crates, and water buckets, and each other's teeth. IMO, the most important thing for them to be wearing is a phone number where we can be reached, because anybody who finds them running loose is going to call first.

  • Quercus- having multiple numbers instead of an address is a good point.. i never really thought about it but i'm sure people would call, not actually bring the dog to your house.. i think i will be ordering some new tags..

Well, the lab I mentioned (chocolate overweight one) almost took me out by slamming into my knee. I commented loudly " he better not insure my knee!" No comment from the owner. Others were keeping an eye on this over exhuberant dog too. Many peeps were standing behind a bench for protection. What really bugs me is that the park has very visible signs when you enter it that say you must have control of your dog.

I just bought Bella some Merricks Grammy's Pot Pie (dry). It sounds so good I'm tempted to give it a try, LOL!!! I haven't given it to her yet, I'm trying to time it out so I can introduce it slowly… I had to get it at a feed & seed supply store. It IS sad that people are uneducated about the differences of dog foods… but what is worse is that some of these companies don't care how bad the food is for our pets. Another example of how money is more important in their pocket... BTW, for treats we like Old Mother Hubbard!!!:D

Hollie will hide her treats and her dog food. Her favorite hiding place is under MY pillow in the bed. She has tried to hide her entire food bowl by pushing one of her plush toys with her nose in an attempt to get the toy on top of her food bowl. Why doesn't she just use her mouth to pick it up and place it on the bowl? Silly dog!

Yes I agree Pat, Fort Funston could get very crowded and dangerous for smaller dogs as packs of bigger dogs playing could cause injury. My 2 Basenjis were very good and stayed pretty close to me and got used to the crowds. The only problem I had there was with this lady who had an older Tri color female Basenji. It would bite my blk/wht, Nika who was 1-1/2 on the butt. A few times of that and I stayed way away from her. The problem is Nika was a very playful girl and never did anything like that. A few times of getting nipped on the butt started her doing it to other dogs and Basenjis. A Basenji would want to play and Nika would chase and give a nip and the the other dog would get mad and a fight would occur. Nobody would ever get hurt thankfully. It was rare that it would happen as I took them there for 9 years, mostly on the weekend without problem. We had a lot of fun and people loved the Basenjis! Ringo, the red/wht was a very entertaining clown when we'd go down to the beach.
