Sally has blood coming out of her?

  • Dave and I were playing with her and she "spotted" blood out of her Urethra area. I When I examined her she appeared like she is in heat and she was fixed before we got her in October. She is approx 2.5-3 yrs old. I palpated her abdomin, and she seems o.k.. This just started about 5 -10 mins ago. She is Kenneled right now and seems fine, but keeps licking it. What could be wrong?

  • Could be a bladder infection.
I would get her to the vet on mon.
Does she cry when she pees?

  • Thanks for your reply…No- She is acting normal, and Sally is a very telling dog. I put her in her kennel, so I could see how much blood is coming out. I will be taking her in on Monday.

  • Should I try and get a sample(the next time she goes) and dip it, myself.? Just in case I see something that the vet might not be able to see tomorrow.

  • Off the top, I would think possible UTI and the blood may really just be a colored discharge.

  • And Bladder infection… I would find a Vet that could see her, if your can't.. but you could collect a fresh sample and drop it off at the Vets. Should be a fresh sample and then immediately to the Vet.

  • Its always scary when they have something like this and its a sun.
Pat, do you think this is an Em room run?

  • It's bright blood with some thicker clear disharge. It looks to be slow down, but not totally gone. I put her water in the kennel and I'm going to be the only one to walk her and take her out today. It's so pretty outsdie, for the first it me in a long time! Why does this stuff happen whenthe vets office is closed and the ER is the only place to go.

Law of averages…. and you are certain that she was spayed?

As long as she is fine other that then, eating, drinking, not in pain… I would think it can wait...

  • Both the Spca and Vet said so, and We've had her since Octber,a nd she has never done this. and She is 2.5-3 years old. I think I see the scar. But You Never Know. It sure looks like it. Let me call the SPCA and see what they say. I'll BRB

  • But then again I am NOT a Vet… mostly people need to go with their gut feeling...

  • Yeah- I think I'm waiting unless seh shows that she can't . Le t me take her for a walk and check w/ SPCA and I'll check back in here a bit later. thanks for ALL of your help. Keep my baby in your good thoughts today.

  • She would have swelling if she was coming into season yes?
I have not had an intact female, so am asking…

  • O.K. I just got off the phone with them and they said she was spayed "per teh owner"…Argh! I can't really find a scar. And she has her Due Claws(spell?)...She is swollen down there, and not complaining a bit. The SPCA said to call and tomorrow,a nd they will mail the certificate to have her spayed there. I am so angry! Why do they trust owners who drop off many dogs at one time. Did the vet not look at her? O-well...She could have gotten prego's in that kennel(SPCA)...I didn't know they only have heat approx every 6-9 months. We've only had her since Mid-Oct.. I'll keep you posted. Its heat! I just know it is!

  • hahah…funny, I think I was posting while you were. I answered your question--yes swelling!

Most Basenjis usually only have a season once a year…. some have twice a year, but typically only once and usually in the Fall. But there are those Basenjis that don't read the book... but sounds like she is in season to me. And you can't have her spayed while she is in season, so you need to be careful with her around any other dogs that might be in tact.... Honestly too, I can't find the scars on my kids after I have had them spayed.

And one other FYI, you might want to consider having her spayed with your own Vet, this is not a slam against the SPCA or any other SPCA, however sometimes they do not use the best of Vets for spay/neuter surgeries. And while it is a routine surgery, if not done right you can have problems for the rest of her life with her leaking urine....

  • Its really crummy the old owners set her up for this season.
    Sigh.
I am always shocked at how some people are re pets.
Glad you paid attention so you don't have any pups coming your way.

  • And if she is in season, for Basenjis it is 28-30 days… She might have started a few days ago, as they are very good about keeping themselves clean when they first come into season... even veteran breeders can miss it...

  • We just noticed Nexa is coming into heat yesterday, we'll have to see how Leo does. We kenneled them last weekend, I don't know if another female at the kennel brought it on or if she is just going on of those odd basenjis. Leo is neutered, but I'm sure we're still in for some excitement. Good luck with Sally, I feel your pain:(

My Basenji had this problem on and off for years before I finally found a good solution. I actually just posted about it elsewhere in here so I'm going to attempt to quote it in here. Let's hope it works lol. @mandi2doors: Copper, my oldest, has always had a sensitive stomach and would get diarrhea out of the blue all the time, so badly that he would have blood dripping from his rear. It freaked me out the first few times it happened! The vet always tried to prescribe an antibiotic but it never helped. The way I always got rid of it was to cook a pound of ground beef (rinsed), mix with a cup of cooked white rice, a cup of cottage cheese, and a cup of plain yogurt. You feed it for about 3-4 days (I always gave him about a cup and a half a day) and then start introducing their dry food back in. A friend on another forum gave me this concoction years ago and it worked perfectly for years. Almost two years ago he got diarrhea and any time I would stop feeding the mixture it would come back. I finally consulted a holistic vet and she said I could continue feeding the mixture but needed to add some veggies to it for fiber, or I could change his dry food. She said to avoid chicken, wheat, soy, and corn. She also recommended feeding a probiotic/prebiotic several times a week in addition to two other supplements, Gastriplex and Moducare (both by Thorne). He's been on Taste of the Wild now, which is grain free (I buy the fish variety but they also have a bison/venison as well as a lamb), and and has had no problems. I'm very careful about the ingredients in the treats I give him now and have had NO diarrhea problems since changing his diet, which is absolutely wonderful! Here are the links for what I use: http://tinyurl.com/27jaroe http://tinyurl.com/2adwtqn- 1 capsule 2x per day http://tinyurl.com/276rn24 - 1 capsule 1x per day http://tinyurl.com/2g47lsp - 1 capsule about 3x per week (I give it on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) Good luck!!

BDawg- She is feeling much better, and doing well on the Nutro. She has been eating a good amount of food each meal. I think she is getting used to it. She was very thin when we got her. She does gain, but not much. Now that she is better, I hope she gains again.
