Tomorrow Is The Big Day

Basenji Talk
  • I can't believe that tomorrow evening we will be brining Kiya home. She just got her 3rd set of shots yesterday and is ready to go.
I am running over the list of what to get. Leash, Collar, potty pads, chew toys….man oah man how exciting it is to have another B in our house.
I've never used potty pads. Chance just learned to potty outside from the beginning. I am a little concerned that when I put one out Chance will shread it before Kiya even has an opportunity to use it.
I was told to purchase a "puppy go potty" with the litter. I've never used it before. Any training advice on this please???

  • WOOHOO~~
    I am so envious!!!
I am new to this board, and I missed all the announcements.
Who is Kiya's breeders and who is she out of??

  • Kiya is from Ken and Marilyn Leighton and Donna Troyna with Zuri Basenji's.
    She is also Fanconi Clear.

  • I can fill in the rest of the Blanks, she is sired by Ch Arubmec's Titus and out of MBIS Ch Zuri's Mugabe (aka - Gabii)…

And Vanessa??.... have you explained all this to Chance?..ggggg If he is like all the other Basenjis, he will be thrilled to have a "visitor"... until you explain that she stays!

  • Hahahaha Pat.
I spoke with Marilyn yesterday and was advised on how well Kiya needs to be treated. :)
Its gonna be interesting to see how well Chance gets along with Kiya. Since he has become a typical teenager he likes to show that he is top dog. :)
Its gonna be an exciting weekend!!!!!!

  • So on the potty pad thing: as you know Dallas is only 3 months & I decided to try the potty pads. Honestly, for me they didn't work. Out of the whole dang package I only actually went through 4 of them before totally giving up. Of those four, that is the amount of times he actually went on them. One of those four he actually went half on the carpet & half on the pad. Then I finally gave up on them when he caught on that they were indeed shredable so he started dragging them around the apartment & trying to shred them. I was done. Haven't used them since & amazingly, no accidents in the house for over a week now!!! :)

  • Congratulations! I still remember bringing little Lenny home for the first time. It was like a tornado was running through the place. Potty training seemed really easy though, he just did whatever Tayda did… I always joked that Lenny probably thought his name was "Tayda-and-Lenny" cause I always called them together...

Good luck! It will be so fun!

  • Alex and I are crossing our fingers that potty training is quick and painless on our house. I remember (wish I didn't) Chance learning to go outside. That sucked. I hated when he would jump on our bed and just pee :(
Were excited to have a new little one. We have been told that girls train quicker with potty training. LOL

  • Yippee! I hope you can sleep tonight! Pictures tomorrow…or when you can, of course! It's gonna be a heck of a weekend! Can't wait to hear & see all about it!

  • Congrats on the second.;) Let the games begin.:D

  • @Basenji_Boy:

Congrats on the second.;) Let the games begin.:D

Let the games begin is soooo right Basenji Boy!! I had no idea what I was getting into when I got my second B, a little girl, a little over a month ago!! Well I did, but I didn't expect it to be so much fun!! Basenji 500s, wrestling matches, fights over bones…..It's a blast! The good thing is the older B, about 13 months old, is really helpful when it come to the potty training thing. They also do a GREAT job at tiring each other out in the back yard!!:D

It is amazing how the first helps with the second. If you have the first set in your routine, the second falls right into line. We are temporarily housing some 4 month old basenji puppies they brought from Africa and they're almost house trained:eek: , it's only been three weeks. We did very little, the other B's did the work for us.:)

I'll always have two or more.

Good luck with your babies, have fun!!!!!:D

  • Speaking of Potty Training. I made a quick stop to the local pet store last night to pick up some last minute supplies for Kiya and found the Puppy Go Potty. I decided to give it a try BUT the sales person made the mistake of showing me some other type of potty box which had astro-turf. I of course had to buy it too. I can't help it….I spoil em. Now she has a choice on where to potty...They told me that if one doesn't work that I can return the other. :)

  • I can't wait to see more pictures of your new baby girl soon!!! Have fun picking her up & introducing her to Chance :)

  • sooo exciting! i was nervous for a month before we got mia!! :D good luck with everything!! i'm sure you'll let us all know how it goes!!

In the video, I do see a lot of basenji traits, but who know... some mixes look like nothing they are really related to. Some basenjis, espec mixes, can be quite large.

You should call animal control and report a dangerous dog running loose. No one should have to deal with that type of danger when walking their dog.

@tanza: I doubt there will be much swelling… and I would not use the Rimadyl unless you really need to.... of course I am not a fan of Rimadyl The site looks good this morning. I did give him a Rimadyl last night, since I wanted him to sleep well and not bother the site. I think now that may have been a mistake. Maybe a little pain would be a good thing. He's behaving perfectly normally, actually a little more nutsy, I think, after being contained all day yesterday. I hope he knows what he's doing…....:)

I have flown with a dog of mine several years ago from England to USA. He was on as "extra" cargo. I had to pick him up at JFK and go through customes with the usual paperwork and check him in again at the ticket counter of my airline. I have also worked for a major airline and know that the pets are kept in a separate area and no hazardous items such as liquid oxygen are in the same hold as the animals. Most newer aircraft have that separate cargo holg heated as the air is very cold outside at cruising altitudes. I was extemely nervous and frank;ly scared about the flight but he did great. England has a six month quarantine but you allowed to visit your pet. I do agree with Pat…any way it is a tuff one for you...Good luck...

I just think that he's settling into your schedule. Dogs are creatures of routine. You may want to teach a "settle down" command for the weekend evenings, and of course, really tire him out during the day on the weekends. a really wiped out dog isn't going to want to play all night.
