• I have a basenji who is up to date on all Vaccinations and we take him to the dog park alot.
Would he be able to transmit a disease to a young puppy?

  • Yes they can… germs can be transmitted to the pup that is not fully vacinated from another dog, just like they can be picked up off the ground. There have been many cases of dogs coming back from places (parks, dogs shows, etc) and bring the disease with them. Happened to my Maggii as a pup, dogs came home from a show, they were fine, within 5 days she was sick.

  • im gonna guess that that's why you shouldn't take puppies to places like petsmart or dog parks before their last DHLPP shots ?

Exactly… not that you should keep them "totally confined", I don't believe in that either.. as I think they need exposure to build up their imunities (spelling)... but you be careful... dog park and pet stores are full of animals that are not kept current on their shots... and can be sick...

  • i've taken mia to petsmart.. actually on the day i got her (her collar was WAY too big! ) and i just didnt put her down the whole time.. lol

That is not a problem… going and not putting her down... and again, you just need to use some common sense... you can't wrap them up and never take them out...

  • yeah. we take her and rocky to my parents. but i know my parents dog lady has her shots and everything. theres really not many other places to take them around here.. 😞

  • That's going to be tough on Roo. He loves the dog park and he is so well behaved after he has been. At least he will have a buddy to play with.

  • I take Dallas to Petsmart, pet speciality store, walks around the block & have even taken him to the dog park[during very low key times]. I just am constantly on the look out for other dogs & if I think anything is suspicious I will simply pick him up & carry him to another spot. Lucky for me Dallas loves to be carried right now so he doesn't mind it & it gets him out of any potential harm.

  • The biggest thing that you want to keep pups away from is other dogs "poop"… the spores that live in poop lasts for a long, long time.... and you have no idea if this was from a stray... or what... and we all know how some people are about not picking up after their animals.... and usually these are the people that do not make sure they are up to date on shots

And walks are great.. as socialization is so important for young pups... again, common sense is the key

  • Yea my vet told me that during our last appointment. He said not to let Dallas sniff other dogs poop no matter where we are because the poop can contain diseases. I see poop all around our community because people don't pick it up after their dogs but Dallas [so far] never really gets too near ti that I have to pull him away.
