Has anyone ever used (or been told about) a "Pooch Potty?"

  • Thanks for the tips =)

I got Peter from Sharon Schindler in Lexington, Texas.

  • Hopefully your pups sire and dam have been DNA tested for Fanconi? and other health clearences. If not then you should do it as soon as the test is available again… if you need information go to www.basenjihealth.org

  • Yes both parents tested clear for Faconi and come from Faconi-free bloodlines. The breeder also said something about the entire litter having blood work done with a diabetes testing strip to test for something else..? What it is, I'm not sure.

  • Prior to the DNA Marker Test, breeders would strip test urine with a diabetes test strips for the presence of glucose in the urine. Since glucose is not usually present until a dog is between 3-7 years old, strip testing puppies does not give any useful information.

Make sure that you have verified that your pup's parents have test results listed in the OFA database, http://www.offa.org. If they do not then the breeder did not use the the DNA based Fanconi Marker Test and you will have to test your puppy as soon as testing resumes to know whether or not your puppy may become affected with this disease.

  • I would stick some dead weeds in the potty box too. My EL D likes to brush up against things when he goes.

  • That looks like a good idea but WOW i just looked at the prices and OMG i would have to get another job just to replace the sod everyweek lol :D :D :p :p

  • it looks quite easy to build yourself. They are way too overpriced!

This is true plus finding a place that sells fresh sod every week may prove to be a challenge. I wonder if you could make a bunch of large, flat containers and grow your own grass potty boxes? Each week, put down a new grass potty box, empty the old box then replant it? The problem I forsee with using real grass is the intense desire to eat grass that some Basenjis possess. Mine graze like sheep when the fresh spring grass starts to come up lol!

  • They are very expensive!

You know, they sell this stuff at Petsmart that supposedly attracts the dog to that spot to eliminate. You just spray it where you want them to go potty. I thought about buying it & trying to spray some on our patio since again this AM it was pouring & Dallas would not stay out in it. I tried so many times for like 25 minutes (had to give up to go to work!!!) but just kept running to get out of the rain. I then took him onto our porch & said "go potty" but he just sat there because he didn't understand that it's okay to go on the porch I guess.

So yea, if anyone can tell me how to get a stubborn B to go on a concrete patio please enlighten me! LOL. Think that spray actually works at all???

I know people that have tried it (the spray) it doesn't work unless by accident… and you know, you need to stand in the rain with Dallas...:p Been there done that with many a puppy

Oh believe me, I was soaked! I was standing right in the rain (during the most downpour of course) in the middle of the grassy area he goes in but he just would NOT go! I even kept bribing him with treats to stay in the grass & go but he kept trying to back out of his collar to get his paws on the concrete vs. in the wet grass. I know when the sprinklers go off it's a bit more a challenge to get him to go in the grass but he manages. This is actually the first time he's been out when it's still be raining down.

Be careful on over using treats... mix it up with joyous praise and a rub under the chin and pat the back. If you do treats only they can think if they stop getting treats they might think it's bad behavior and change the potty behavior, but by mixing it up they still get the praise and reward with a good job, also always use their name with praise, and never with discipline. I'm reading this book about raising and training basenji's and it's also what my folks said they did that worked with their basenji

Can she see you from her bed? Try raising her crate up so she can see you and give her something old that smells like you….she is so young to have left her littermates, she will need extra reassurance! Hope you get a good nights sleep soon!

Well, I hadn't really thought much about litterbox training, but thankfully we won;t be needing to look for alternative options to outside pottying. Things have all seemed to work out great over here. I think it just took me a little while to get accustomed to everything, but everything is running smoothly now. Thanks everyone.

Fluffypony, Consider the kennels the best investment that you will make. We did not agree with crate training in the beginning when we got our Puggle, I felt that it was cruel to lock him up all day. We bought an excerise pen, put the pee pads in there and everyday we came home to shredded pee pads and a huge mess. Finally we decided to get the kennel because we could not take the mess anymore not to mention that we would have to bathe the Chase everynight after we cleaned up the mess. In time, we were able to trust Chase to be left with the kennel door open and he could be free in the kitchen because we had gates up. This took about 6 months. He hardly ever had an accidentonce he learned and got older. Then, we got Zahra, our Basenji, now they are both locked in their kennels all day, I don't trust Zahra to not destroy our house. She still has not fully learned that she can not potty in the house. She is getting better but if I give her too much room in her crate she will potty on one end and hang out in the other. I thought Chase was hard to train, Zahra is much worse. Maybe it is the fact that we got her from a pet store and she was there for so long and it was acceptable for her to potty in her cage and sleep in it. Yuck. Sometimes we let them share a kennel because when we first got Zahra she did not like to be apart from Chase, I think it made her feel safe to be with him in his kennel all day. Anyway, as a person who originally did not like the kennel idea this was my first dog, I thought it was mean now I know that they actually enjoy the security of it. They are pack animals. Hope this helps, Jenn
