Another Fine Mess

Basenji Talk
  • OK so how many have you been sleeping on a Sunday and heard these famous words. BAD DOG!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!!!!!!! So of course I jumped out of bed thinking my innocent little B was still snuggled up under the covers. NOT! The little escape artist had gotten out of our room (I swear she opens doors) and she decided that my brand new area rug needed a hole chewed dead smack in the middle of it. I know what you are all thinking, but where was her mother (being me) and I must sadly admit that I was a bad mother yesterday and slept in (this happened at 7AM) so I blame myself. Trixie seems to think that if she is up than every one should be up. So anyway I now have a nice hole right smack in the middle of my rug. We had a Super Bowl party last night and it was the topic of the evening. My husband was so angry with her, but by last night she had wormed her little way back into his good graces. One look at those eyes and that look of WHAT DID I DO WRONG??? and you just can't stay mad at her. I just keep telling everyong she just turned a year old last month give her some time!!! She is a little devil!!! LOL

  • And THAT is why we crate ours at night!! LOL

But we often hear/say, "WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING??????"
at many other times of day. After all, we ARE Basenji owners.

  • Yes I know! I do normally get up with her but we have been doing all kinds of work to our house and I was so tired Saturday night. We tried crating her at night when she was a baby but we could not stand to hear her pitiful crying. I know what you are thinking! SUCKERS!!! But she is crated during the day while we are at work so I hate to turn around and crate her at night. So like I said I blame myself!!!

  • You may try the crate in your room. Medjai sleeps in my bed, but if he wakes up too early and doesn't have to go out, i just let him lay in his crate (he does it willingly).

And I definatly know that 'what did i do wrong' face. I think the tris and b/w do it best because of the dark face, but since they're lower to the ground than large dogs, the face just looks soo sad, and you can't turn it away.

    Yup –- suckers!!! :D

No, I do understand. I'm home all day, so I have no qualms crating the dogs at night.

  • The crate is in our room but she does not like to go in it. I think because she is in it during the day while we are at work. I don't dare leave her out because I'm afraid I would come home to a disaster area. We have left her out by herself and her big sister Josie just for like a half hour and she does fine. However I don't trust leaving her out for more than that yet!!!

  • our dog did the same thing when younger.

A quite or missing basenji can only mean one thing - TROUBLE!

Like you said you just know when they are up to no good!

  • We keep our door shut or put up a baby gate at night. That may help.

  • EL D really only gets "into trouble" when he wants my attention. Then he'll grab whatever (and I do mean whatever) is close at hand/mouth and parade it past me before running away like hell. :D

  • We have just purchased several baby gates. I have been meaning to pick them up but she is so funny. She will behave herself for a couple days and it's like she can't help herself. I agree with the getting moms attention coment. Also I don't know if anyone else's B is like this but change seems to get her more wound up. We have visitors right now and it's almost like she shows off and wants to show everyone all of her wonderful tricks!!! I love her!

Oh yes, Trixie brings me things all the time that she knows she is not supposed to have!!! Its a big game between her and I. A tad bit frustrating at times lol! She also follows me from room to room watching my every move. Especially when I am cleaning or putting things away. New cupboard doors to snoop around in I suppose. They are such curious dogs. My other girl dog Josie could care less what I am doing. She just wants her food, water and her everyday petting from me.

Here's an update on Lana: since the Hips/Eyes/Fanconi is all good/normal/clear (still waiting for thyroid), we actually went ahead and selected the male, absolutely stunning Ch. Bushbabies Red Ryder, from Bushbabies Basenjis in Livermore, CA. Waiting for Lana to come in heat! They are a very good match, body and personality, should be pretty nice puppies!

I just weighed Otis, and this is after he ate breakfast..he now weighs 23.8lbs, and is looking trimmer for sure. His ribs are definitely right under the surface now, as supposed to a little squishy..the no-bacon, no-butter, no-cinnamon roll diet worked..He did however, with some help from our dachshund, Gus, get a hold of one of our roosters, Elmer, and hurt him bad..we had to put poor Elmer down. Now we have reinforced the fence, on the chicken side, so they can't get over and be a treat for the dogs..Boy was he remorseful after that ordeal..or at least that is how he came across. Thanks all for helping me with your inputs, much appreciated..

my thanks to all of you for your wonderful advice - i will take everything that you all have said into consideration before making a decision - however my wife and i have decided that our grieving over the loss of our 4 year old is not over yet so we are going to delay any decision until we can get past this point - with that in mind, and realizing how difficult these discussions have been for me, i am going to unsubscribe myself from this site until such time as we can come to better terms with our situation - again, my thanks to all of you for trying to help - Manny

Please, please post the video…I'm already laughing thinking about it. Oh, and BTW, I can understand why you might want to muzzle your B when playing with your squirrel :D :D!
