    I'm thinking that's a good thing.;)

  • People will always want the dogs they are most familiar with anyway, and so many people have NO idea what these dogs are.
And most people want easy dogs anyway.

My dd called the other day from college and had me text/pix her photos of Jazz and Keoki because a guy there was telling her that he'd seen Basenjis before and thinks they are ugly dogs. Of course she couldn't believe that anyone could possibly think that, so they went 'round and 'round about before she finally asked for photos.
His response, "Oh. That's not what I thought they were. Those are cute."

Most people, upon learning that's what they are, say something like, "I've heard of those; I didn't know that's what they look like."
Although, once I did have a man argue that these were NOT Basenjis, that he knew what Basenjis are and these are not it. LOL.

  • I agree, I am glad that Basenjis are not on the list…..

  • I would have been shocked and surprised if they were on the list. Most people say "A what?" LOL

For some reason people ask us if they're Jack Russells, I don't even think they look alike.

When I tell them basenji, I get that same…...a what?

I was insulted when a cop once told me that Jazzy looked like a really large chihuahua.
A CHIHUAHUA???????? with apologies to the chi-lovers… I think those dogs are UGLY with those big ol' eyes, rectangular bodies, and they're always trembling. ugh. NO, my dog is NOT a chihuahua!

Jazz, of course, is stunning. :)

I'd have told the Cop he looked like a really large Mall Security Guard…...just to get even.:D

    :D :D :D Too funny…that would have been a great comeback!

  • I think it's better to NOT see your breed on that list.

The breeds on that list are the ones more likely being sold from BYB, in petstores (thus from puppy mills), found as a stray, etc. The popular breeds are the ones they stock up on because they are popular which thus heeds a lot of imbreedings & huge problems amongst the breed.

I like the Basenjis are more unique because it means that not only are you more likely to avoid supporting puppy mills or have the breed go awry with imbreeding, etc. but it also serves as a nice conversational piece when people ask what kind of dog & after you reply with a sweet "basenji" they say "oh…what's that?!" Haha :)

I hope Bs are NEVER on the list! Just my two cents!

  • AKC lists Basenji at #89:)

  • I agree with all who are happy not to see Bs on the top 10 list. I feel it can only lead to more PMs and BYBs out for the almighty buck and with no concern for health.

Besides that, I kinda like it that most people don't know what kind of dog my Boy is and have to ask. Besides being the love of my life, he's a conversation piece!:D

  • When I say I have two Basenji's… people are like, "Oh, two Benji's?" And I'm like... NO, Benji was a movie. DUH!!!

  • AKC generates their Top 10 list each year based on the number of puppies registered that year for each breed. It is a really good thing that we are not in the Top 10 because that would mean that there were a whole lot of puppies being born and there just aren't that many responsible breeders out there for us to find ourselves in the Top 10 so it would mean that puppymills and BYBs were cranking them out.

Actually, I've had more than one person say that Ruby looks like a dingo or a wild dog.

I remember walking her last summer around the Old Port in Portland and a whole group of people came running over saying…OMG, is that a Basenji? They were the only ones who've ever called it right when I've had her out and about.

  • I'm so happy basenjis are not on the top ten. I always knew I didnt want a common dog that every other person had lol < how boring!

  • I am concerned that Bulldogs are in the top 10 though. They are a medical nightmare.

Amen to that… sweet but really full of health problems

There was a bulldog in Nexa's first training class, he was under a year old and had already blown out a knee and had to have reconstructive surgery…that can't be cheap!

The golden I used to have did similar things w/her ears/eyes when I approached w/a leash. It was a habit formed from years of me sliding a new collar on with the leash attached. She'd squint and pull her ears back in anticipation of the collar being slid over her head. The smile? I never got that.

I so wish this article would make it on the list of news worthy items to talk about on the news circuit through out the country..at least if it is seen by the millions throughout…maybe we can keep a few elderly dogs out of the shelters and off the streets.. Thank you so much for posting AgileBasenji..it touched me lots.. My two elderly dogs passed away in march and then again exactly one month later to the day..in april..very hard for me and my hubby, but also for our kids..these two dogs had been in our lives since we were dating and they were there when we brought Sofia and Lukas home from the hospital...through illness, happiness and age we have loved, laughed and hugged these two boys...we miss them so much..

How come the invisible dogs are so much better behaved than real ones? When I run my invisible dog for agility (aka walking the course), he always qualifies. Well, except when I was running my invisible Jet the try-ing.

I saw this show for the first time last night. I didn't think it was sad, because the nice doggy gets adopted into a home where the people have been evaluated and dog is placed with people who are best suited for the individual dog. It's like a reality game and they all know only one home gets the dog. The people know they might not get that dog. But I'm glad that the people who don't win on the show, will probably adopt and rescue another well deserving dog. Just my take . . . but I only saw the one show.
