@tanza @debradownsouth Exactly what I meant. Like a child, you cannot expect a pup to do something their body has not grown enough to do. It's been years since I've had a puppy in the house. "Bug" came to me at 18months, well past potty training. (Thank heavens!)
Puppy!

So I went & saw our breeder the Thursday after Christmas. Here are the pictures of the puppies, including the one I picked out for us! We get to bring him home at the end of January
MEET DALLAS!!!
All the boys of the litter
Dallas found that sleeping on top of his brother was most comfortable. :p
So how does he look? I'm already madly in love with him after only spending an hour of time with him! Haha.
-
OMG! He's just beautiful! I love puppies…I'm sure your love for him will keep growing and growing. Looking forward to the pictures when you bring him home. Get prepared now!!
-
Too cute, who is your breeder again?
-
Oh lordy! I love the puppies!! It IS a good thing I have the husband I have or I'd be over-run!
It looks like his white collar only goes half-way 'round; that's cute.
{I'll take the one he's sleeping on…....}

I love 'em already just from the pics!

Only $10 and a great workbook for issues that crop up with new basenji babies.

That is a great resource… however, I have to say, I totally disagree with the crate training section... that IMO is way to much crate time... IMO, there needs to be a balance between crate and house time... since I have a doggy room (bathroom/laundry room) with access to the yard with the doggy door my pups are loose during the day when I am at work, so I had no problem with them being crated overnight

How much crate time is too much IYO?

Well if you read the Evergreen manual… it is pretty darn close to 24/7.... unless they have changed it.... IMO, should be at least equal time in and out of the crate... of course all situations are different... but that is the rule of thumb I mostly try to go by....

Thanks for all the compliments on our new bundle of joy! I cannot wait to see how much bigger he will be when we go to bring him home later this month. That was 2 weeks ago (yesterday) when he was only 5 weeks old. Our breeder said he would be close to double in size by 8 weeks when we get him. I can't wait!

Our breeder is Midge Greenlee in Ocala, Florida. Her breed name is Serengeti Basenji's. She was the head of The Basenji Club of America for about 10 years before she stepped down a couple years ago. I saw her adult B's & they were gorgeous!
Also, for those who mentioned the Evergreen book, I am going to look into it. I asked for a training book for Bs for Christmas but no one got it for me sooo I'm on the lookout for a good one to buy myself! Any other suggestions?

I have a boy, now 16 1/2 yrs old that was sired by Midge's old boy.. Jazzman… When you go get your pup... tell her that Pat and OJ (Ch Bushbabies Obviously Jazz) say HI... and that OJ is still going strong... Midge got to see him in person at the nationals last October....

I have the 2002 edition and it states
"If no one is free to supervise the puppy, it is probably best to crate him if he cannot otherwise be restrained from mischief".
It does have a larger piece in the house-training section, but it is mostly about dealing with a young puppy that must be confined for four to six hours a day – if the owner is working, etc.
The trainer I took Jazzy to recommended only letting the pups out of the crate to go out for potty and 10 -1 5 minutes of play time every two hours. It was EXTREME crate training, IMO, and there was no way I was going to do that! UGH>

I agree, wow that is extreme. We start the puppies out with an expen arrangement similar to yours…....crates inside the expens. We give the pups freedom outside the expen in tiny increments. You give them too much freedom, they may not want to go back into the expen......I understand that.................but sentencing them to a crate 24/7 seems a bit much to me.
