    What is the difference between a sight hound collar and all other ones?

    Why is one better than the other?

    I don't know if I'll put this in the right terms, but I think the reason some sighthounds need particular collars is that they have smaller heads in relation to the girth of their necks. Take greyhounds, for instance. If you use one of those collars with a closure the hound will be able to slip out of it. At leisure it should be adjusted so that it sits lower on the neck, but that circumference will easily slip over the head. Martingales are like instantaneously adjustable in the sense that on a loose leash they are comfortably loose on the neck but on a taught leash they get smaller. In the case of basenjis I think you can go either way (sighthound collar or not). Mine wear Northwind martingales.

    If you check out All Hounds Apparel, http://allhoundsapparel.com, they have several different styles of collars including what is usually referred to as a Hound Collar. Like MauiGirl explained the traditional sighthounds have narrower heads then their necks so often can easily slip a correctly adjusted buckle collar. Collars like a martingale, limited slip and Hound Collar all make escape more difficult. The difference between the collars I see referred to as "Hound Collars" and martingales and limited slips is the width of the collar is usually greater to help spread the pressure out when the dog pulls in order to help prevent trachea damage.

    I love my martingales! I also really like the northwind collars. Kiora has a nice slip collar and a martingale lead from them. I also have a martingale from a lady who makes collars locally. It is really nice beacause they cannot back out of them but they are very wide so they don't cause neck discomfort. One of Kiora's collars is even lined with fleece..comfy! Also IMO The wide martingale's really enhance a long elegant hound neck. The Main thing is just like a slip/choke collar they are for walking only, you cannot use them as your tag collar because their is a risk that they will get caught by the collar and choke.

    I've used the Easy Walk harness for both my girls for over a year - Gemma can slip any other kind, and so can Shay. Gemma can even slip her collar. The Easy Walk gives me good control when they are suddenly off chasing a squirrel to the end of the lead, and since they are not tight in the front, where the ring is, they are not overly restricted when they walk well. Which they do seldom.:rolleyes:

    @Thylacine: The shock collar I use is a sports dog. It has given our basenji nearly unlimited freedom on his long romps. He might get shocked twice a week. It changed his whole life. When I took my dog to the vet, the entire staff were congratulating me on making a common sense decision. The vet said" That will be one less basenji in the shelter. Being a dedicated liberal it is painful to see such obtuse political correctness as is often exhibited on this forum. Be aware if you admit to using a shock collar the PC's will hound you to death. HA! I voted for Bush twice, I know all about it. Seriously though, I appreciate hearing from someone that has used it effectively and humanely. And while I agree with the theory that walking a dog helps in training, I cannot believe that any human is going to be able to give a basenji, of all dogs, enough exercise through walking unless they can do 20 miles a day. My dog out runs golden retrievers and still wants more, no way I can compete with that just going for a walk. If I can only get my giant hamster wheel hooked up to my generator…

    Oh that is good idea. I was thinking of getting one of those dual leads for two dogs and using one clip on her martingale and on the harness. She is a sneaky little wench!

    In general, they leave them alone. It is when they have to wait in the boxes because of some delay that they usually get bored enough to try to get them off. In that race there was one basenji that had no box training and really fought the boxes which delayed the race long enough for Levi to wrestle his muzzle off. I do have one basenji who fusses with her muzzle during a race but she is getting better about it and actually won 2 races this weekend even with the fussing. We are going to take the suggestion of a Visla owner and start giving her canned cheese when she wears the muzzle and doesn't fuss to reinforce the muzzle is a good thing. The fuzzy lure was a huge reinforcement but she has some negative associations with the muzzle that we have to work on overcoming.

    Many, many years ago, when my boyfriend at the time and I got our first basenji, I suggested to BF that we try a shock collar to keep him from escaping when I forgot to close the garage door or backyard gate. BF promptly agreed wholeheartedly–thought it was a fantastic idea--but he suggested that I wear the collar so that I would get shocked anytime I left open a door or gate....hahahahaha. Needless to say, we never did get a shock collar.....and I am very, very dependable now about closing doors and gates:)
