  • Hi all!

I've been lurking for a wee while and this looks like a great forum :).
We recently adopted a basenji/german shepherd mix from the dog rescue where I volunteer- his name is Basil and he's a rascal. He loves chasing the hose, birds, noisy cars- basically anything that makes noise and/or move fast. He also likes stealing socks and plastic bags and checking out what's on the kitchen bench and coffee table. It's been challenging but so worth it!
I also own a greyhound mix called Pocket Rocket and they're best of friends.

I'm looking forward to meeting you and chatting with you all here :)

  • Welcome! As B_Boy said…we love pics! Where in New Zealand are you from?

  • Welcome to the forum - you'll find it fun and full of good info. And yes the pictures are the best part!

  • Welcome!!! This is a great forum with lots of great & fun people. I hope you enjoy it :)

  • Thanks everyone for the warm welcome :) I'll post some pics of my two ratbags in the picture forum.

Renault- I'm from Christchurch, in the South Island. It's a beautiful city- have you been over?

  • @Vinia:

I have been over and I absolutely loved Christchurch. I spent 3 months in New Zealand (on a long vacation) right after New Zealand won the America's Cup from Dennis Conner :D. New Zealand is hands down the most beautiful county I've ever been and I'm dying to go back. Christchurch was my home base for about 3 weeks while I did a lot of traveling in the city and the surrounds…I loved that city. :D

Yes, please post pictures of the kids!

  • Welcome to the forum. Ditto to what everyone said - you'll like it here. This forum has a lot of diversity and no meaness….......which speaks well of basenji owners! We may be weird (as the winery lady said) but we're a nice bunch! New Zealand is also on my "short list" of places to eventually visit.

  • Welcome…I'm sure you'll enjoy it! Looking forward to the pics!

  • I would certainly have to agree with you about NZ's appeal. I think the LOTR movie helped a lot in promoting our image LOL. I love the country- don't think I would/could live anywhere else, really!
I certainly hope you're able to make your way over here (again)- although it is quite far to travel :P

P.S. there are some pics up :)

  • Welcome to the forum Vinia….enjoy.

I have had the pleasure of owning both breeds. There is another forum member here who also has a basenji and a Shiba. Lol, they are both very stubborn breeds. Depending on what you want they are very different though. Shibas need a lot of care for grooming, they blow a lot of coat and can get matted fur, on the other hand they make a very good watch dog. Basenjis don't bark but make a multitude of other noises. Their coat is nice and short for less grooming, though they too blow coat, just not as bad as a Shiba. They both maintain puppy characteristics their whole lives and live long lives. I think our Shiba was 16 when we lost her. Both need a lot of socialization, with both people and dogs. This is a must. Good luck with whatever breed you choose. Look at parents for temperament and do your reading on health problems and make sure you adopt from a reputable breeder.

Lakers13 - all this will be very disappointing to you now that you are on the verge of getting your puppy but I hope you'll be taking this very well meaning advice. I don't know this breeder and so wouldn't dream to make comment but of course these other resepctable breeders do and you've heard from others' experienes with dogs affected with Fanconi. I'm sure at this time of year you'll soon be able to find a healthy puppy form a genuine breeder.

@dunappy: Hie all I'm from New Mexico. I currently have two basenji neutered males named George and Ice Man. I lost my female (their mother) this past weekend at the ripe old age of nearly 17. She was born Dec 19th, 1991 and passed away last Friday Oct 12th, 2007. George and Ice Man are both almost 15 having been born Dec 13th, 1993 and both are still healthy and going strong at the moment. however I know here in the next few years I'm going to be without them and I'm starting to look for a young one to bring in. I lost my first basenji female last year after 16 years very hard. I now have 2 a female and a male. Its been fun they are both from the same litter and my son got a male at the sametime.

Your baby is very cute! Let's see, a Basentzu or a Shihsenji… Shih Tzus I have known have been loves, but tend to be airheads, and Basenjis are frequently smarter than we are, so who knows what you'll get! Welcome to the Forum! Terry
