Help with registered names

  • Being picky & undecisive, we have put off picking Booger & Lola's registered names for quite some time. We plan to course Booger this fall, so we would like to have his registered name figured out by then. Since we are goofy, we would like Booger's name to be a play on his call name. We've been thinking, Raja's Pick of the Litter (his dad's name is Raja), which is my favorite. Andrew also came up with "Raja's Nose Goblin" which I don't care for as much, but its "his" dog so who am I to have a say? ;)
Lola's name was originally Sweetpea, but after several weeks I decided it was too "cutesy" for a grown dog. I was thinking about a couple of new names for her, and one I liked was Lola. We knew from a very young age she was going to be a runner, and we came up with "Run, Lola, Run" (an obscure movie reference).
Any suggestions? I know there are some clever people out there… let's hear it.

  • If you are going to name Lola after the movie you should consider the actual name of the movie "Lola Rennt"…are you supposed to have either of their Kennel names in their names at all... I know many breeders require the kennel name...if so let us know what they are and maybe someone will have an awesome idea for y'all. :D

  • You may want to consider a word that you use with all your dogs. Just like breeders use a kennel name, many people use a name so others will recognize that it is a dog owned by them. Some use a name or word that becomes part of the name, I hope Pat doesn't mind but her Maggii and OJ's names are a good example of this Zuri's Obviously Maggii and Bushbabies Obviously Jazz. The word Obviously was used to connect them to Pat. Some names put their name at the end using the word at to connect it like Klassic's Tri-Bal Vixen At Rugosa. Rugosa being the owner and Klassic being the breeder.

  • Exactly Lisa (and of courese I do not mind) And same with Emerant-Fopaw TriWizard at Tanza - Tanza being the owner and Emerant & Fopaw the breeders.

  • We're new to the whole registered naming thing & don't have a good understanding of the whole concept. Kennel name isn't required, and as far as a word to connect them all… hmm I guess we'll have to think about this one a bit more.
I do like Lola Rennt I think better than Run Lola Run.

  • Kennel name doesn't mean that you have to have a kennel or breeding dogs… it is just a way to ID dogs that come from or live with a person/family.

Breeders do use kennel names and like to have it on their dogs to ID them as coming from or being brought into their lines....

  • I know several people who use a kennel name when they ILP their rescues. This way anyone who sees the name knows they belong to those people.

Registered names can be quite an art and some breeder's registered names tell you a whole lot about the dog if you know the hints they put into their names.

Some examples, many breeders will use Ti in a name to represent that the dog is tri colored such as Zuri's Ti-Tanza Wazi Ajabu or Cambria's Ti-Mungai. Shirley Chambers of Khajah basenjis used the word Gay in the names of all of her red and white basenijs. So you never had to see a picture of Khajah's Gay Excalibur or Khajah's Gay Samantha to know that they were red and white basenjis. L Jane Williams of Candu basenjis uses the word Blacque in the names of all of her black and whites, like Candu Berimo Blacque Jade and Candu's Back in the Blacque.

  • This is a very informative thread! I sort of knew about kennel names, but all the other info is quite interesting. Someday I may lose my mind and get a puppy, I'll store this all away for the naming!

Anne in Tampa (I won't usually take any dog under 2!)

  • And also used it "Tri" for a Tri Basenji in the name Tanza's Tri The Obvious for one, and there are many names with "play" on the word "Tri" …. but the connecting fact is that the dog is a Tri (same at Ti, that was used by Leighton's with Zuri dogs)

  • Booger is FINALLY registered with his proper name. We've decided to use "Griffin" in our dogs' names as a reference to the half lion/half eagle mythical creatures. The Egyptians borrowed them from other civilizations & used them in art depicting hunting scenes. So Booger is now "Griffin's Pick of the Litter."

@YodelDogs: We have already established that Dexter's "breeder" was disreputable. How many litters did this person have? If she had more than one litter then it is entirely possible that the papers that were supplied with Dexter may not have even been from the litter he was in. Very True Robyn

We used to feed ours Blue Buffalo until we realized they were not eating the little nutritional things in there. We now feed Nutro's Natural Choice and they are doing very well on it, coats shiny, no problems digesting, etc. We vary the type occasionally, but they seem to love the Chicken, Oatmeal and Rice formula the best.

Although "NO" became what Shaye most heard, along with " drop it" (she's too quick for "leave it," so "drop it" has replaced that) and "get off the table" and "stop digging the screens" (on the porch), lately we have been firmly saying her name, then squirting her in the face with a squirt bottle. Amazing how well that works - of course the entire house is getting wet but she's getting the picture that when we pick up the squirt bottle and show it to her, she'd best stop whatever it is she's doing. Gemma, of course, responds to "stop" and "leave it." Must be the "other" kind of dog in her….

I want my basenji to have an African name, so I searched African names via Google. Most of the sites tell you what African language the name is from and what the name means. It was an enjoyable process!
