  • I certainly learned some time ago that Chike, is as most b's exceptionally smart. Now he has outsmarted me and I have no idea what might work.

I take the dogs with me in the car farily often and use dog seatbelts. About two months ago Chike pops up to the front seat with me. I thought the harness had broken or accidently come undone.

After a couple more trips with chike bounding out of his seat and being unable to find anything wrong with the harness I started paying closer attention.

Shortly after I had buckled him in I watched him as he took the seat belt latch between his two front paws and poked the button with his nose until it came unlatched.

  • Yup… they are way to smart... that is why I use crates in the car...gggg

  • Well so much for that idea LMAO

  • We pretty much have to take her in tandem - the wife or me riding shotgun and holding her. She loves her daddy so it's usually easier if I'm holding her and the wife is driving.

  • Gee I don't have any trouble with EL D - he likes to ride shotgun (sometimes he'll stand in the space behind the front seat of my pickup and look our the window) and if nothing interesting is happening outside he'll just curl up and go to sleep until we get to wherever.

  • I use a car harness with My isZi because if I don't she wants to sit on my shoulders and it makes it very hard to drive. I have no idea why she wants on my shoulders even if I'm sitting at the desk on the computer she thinks she has to be on my shoulders. I guess because her ancestor's were carried that way?

I took two basenjis to the Philippines back in 1986 when we moved there (my husband works for the Dept of Defense). And brought them back three years later. Binta and Cheka were young and healthy and did just fine. We had to get a Dept of Agriculture certificate and since my husband was already there we knew the exact procedures they would go through at the airport in Manila. I was on the plane with them (they were in cargo of courses) and it was the longest 24 hr flight I have ever taken (I go to Asia a couple of times a year). I fixed water bottles to their crates which they had used since they were puppies. After we left the Manila airport we spent Christmas in the Philippine Plaza Hotel (4 stars) with them and then went on to Olangapo. We did it then as we loved them too much to leave them behind and the Bs enjoyed the Philippines – parrots and monkeys in the backyard and on walks we would see monitor lizards and all sorts of tropical birds. Plus we had an American vet on the base. Glad I don't have to do it again, however. I did fly my two Aby boys down to Naples with me in a carrier under the seat this January as we still want the animals with us when vacation as much as possible. Merry ... in Naples for two months with Louie and Hobbes, our Abysinnians

If you ship him underneath in cargo, don't forget there are temperature restrictions. Where would you transfer planes at? This summer has been hot in many cities! Please check the requirements for the airline you will be traveling on. There is usually a limit to the number of dogs allowed on board and in cargo. You will need to make a reservation for him at the time you make your own. There may be additional requirements since you are coming from Canada, you will need to check with the USDA, the CDC and the State of Massachusetts. You can find the requirements on the USDA website and it has links to each state. http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_welfare/pet_travel/pet_travel.shtml You need to make sure the carrier will fit under the seat so if the carrier you are considering is much larger than the large size Sherpa brand bag I doubt it will fit under the seat. I used to travel with Arnie onboard about 10 years ago before 9/11. I trained him to get in and out of the Sherpa bag and to stay in for short periods of time. He almost always laid down in it. He never made noise even when we were in first class and they served food! Most people did not even know I had a dog. I also made sure I was comfortable carrying him in the bag. I figured if the airline employees thought I was struggling with him then he was too heavy and he would not be let on the plane. He was an older pup but weighed about 18-20 lbs. Jennifer

@MacPack: There was a black & white basenji in an ad for those swim-current pools a couple of years ago, he was running along the side of it. Just a glimpse. I posted about that one on the forums in this area, I think. Someone else posted a link to the video. :) Pretty sure I titled it "Is that a B I see?"

I tried a harness too but got too complicated to undo and my dog kept chewing it. Gave that up and she lies in a transport cage that takes all the back of my car. Had no choice after one seat belt has been dammaged as well as whatever was in the car!. When she is in her "car home", she just goes to sleep or sits up and looks at the road, cars and other things she would like to run after (the back of my car has a large rear window so, plenty to look at during a long journey). No room left in my car but a good solution for my Basenji, when I open the door of her "car home", she waits until I have put the leash on and then jumps out, well attached. If I take her with me in a friend's car, she sits on the back seat quietly BUT no way, can I leave her alone in that car, she would destroy everything and pee on the seats !(from past experience, not much fun for my friends)

I put Tayda and Lenny in a kennel in the backseat…. they seem to be pretty happy with it. They wouldn't sit still in a carseat.... also helps with the hair all over the seat issue.
