    Hi all,
    I have a almost-4 year old male who's just a little sneak! He loves to chase squirrels and other creatures in my large fenced yard and typically loves to "help" me with my gardening. He also, typically, loves food and will try and knock his food dish out of my hands before I can get it to the floor! And if I'm not fast enough in preparing his dinner he'll take the dish and prance around the house with it!

    Hello and welcome!! I too have a squirrel obsessed basenji (mixed with whippet). As I type this, she is at the window…. watching for the squirrels!!

    Welcome..I'm in PA but we have friends in northern Minnesota. How's your guy like those cold winters. It's only fall and my B is already getting whimpy. I love this forum it's lots of fun and helpful.

    I finally got a couple of pictures of EL D up on the members gallery page.

    We live in the suburban Twin Cities area with a big enough yard so El D can run around enough to work off some energy. Even though he's an "only dog" there's enough neighbor dogs to keep him happy in the pee loop. He has the run of the house while I'm at work (surprisingly without problems) and burrows under the bed covers. I have a coat for him for winter walks but he barely tolerates it.

    I'm in Blaine. I met a lady with a tricolor who lives in my neighborhood. I didn't realize there were so many in MN!

    Well there are a couple of us breeders. Sally Wuornos of Sonbar Basenjis and Me, MIJOKR Basenjis. Up North there is Cresendo Basenjis (although she has not been breeding or showing lately and Faded Rose also not breeding often. down South Ankuh Basenjis - limited breeding) There are also 2 active puppy mills, one in Foley and one in Walnut Creek as well as another in Eau Clare WI that all sell animals and encourage breeding.

    So as you can see - some good some not so good producers of basenjis. Add to that people that move here with the dogs - the rescue dogs that we've all found homes for in MN and voila - quite a basenji community.

    @abonnard Pee pads got me through in the end, she would pee every 20 mins for the first months, then 40 mins, then she suddenly went to being able to hold it for many hours. One of the best purchases I got before she arrived was a small carpet washer, saved my sanity. The cleanup is so key otherwise they go back to the same spot.

    @msjames, @tanza did you a solid favor outlining expectations. Networking really is key to finding a "reputable" breeder. Most show their dogs and are connected to other breeders through showing. They all seem to know who is planning a litter and who isn't. I completely agree with Pat that you should meet your breeder in person prior to the puppies even being born. You can learn a lot. Is a Basenji right for you? If you want a dog to hang with you in the driveway with the garage door open as you chat with neighbors, or stand calmly with the front door open as you receive a UPS package... ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Basenjis will bolt. they'll be gone in a second. They see it. They chase it. And if you think you have them trained... no. They've trained you. When they see it they will chase it. Basenjis, in my experience, need exercise. Mine get two walks a day. When they don't, they can be destructive. They're not shy about expressing frustration or displeasure through chewing up your best stuff. A big secure yard can mitigate this, but that's not a guarantee. They love seeing outside, so keep your blinds and drapes open otherwise they may open them themselves even if that requires chewing through them. They will climb onto windowsills, tables and low counter tops. They are capable of scaling a six-foot fence. They are known to climb trees. These are extreme examples, but better to know now. They are super affectionate. They can be trained... to a point. They are clowns and provide endless entertainment. A Basenji baroo is the best sound ever! They love to snuggle and will sleep on your bed and under the spreads and sheets if you let them. They love to share body heat. Tail twitches when I return home are the best!

    @basenjilovers - She is very cute, please make sure that DNA testing was done for Fanconi and PRA. And if not or you are not sure, you can get the test kits at www.ofa.org. You do the test as it is a cheek swab.
