Allergic to dogs who owns a basenji?

Basenji Talk
  • Is there anyone who owns a basenji and is allergic to dogs and cats?

I read in many places that basenjis are good dogs for people with those allergies, as they have qualities that allow people with allergies to not have as many problems.

  • They are good for some people with allergies, but because they do shed, they have dander and this what usually sets people off. However it is not as bad as many other breeds. The best thing to do is to visit personally and see how you react.

  • Hello! I am allergic to lots of dogs and cats and I have 2 B's. Sometimes in inside of my arm will get a rash, but not often. But, I don't get any of the sneezing and itchy eyes that I get with other dogs.

Before I got my dogs, I visited a few breeders and let them lick me, sit on my lap, etc etc etc to see if I was allergic.

  • My brother-inlaw is allergic to dogs. He never has a problem with my B but he's never all over him either. He's not really an animal person. He's fine with no pets…can't figure that one out. hahahaha My sister and her kids just have to enjoy my mini zoo.

  • My son. daughter & myself have bad allergies, cats in particular and the dogs do not really seem bother us.

That's why we got a basenji originally.

  • my roommie is allergic to dogs, and he only has a problem with my B when he wears short sleeves and plays rough, he gets a little rash for 30 minutes. other than that, there is not one problem with sneezing or anything else.

@scewbydoo One of our vet techs volunteers with the shelter where she was born. Her mom was labeled as Jack Russell. Her goofy nature makes me think Boxer mix, but who knows. The shelters down in S. TX aren't the most accurate at breed identification. I once had a shelter in San Antonio send me a picture of a brindle Basenji they wanted me to pull...it was a calico cat. Regardless of breed, Roxy is home.

In the video, I do see a lot of basenji traits, but who know... some mixes look like nothing they are really related to. Some basenjis, espec mixes, can be quite large.

My mum has one of these, though a bit different.A good friend of hers, sadly no longer with us of the Taysenji Basenjis brought it back for her when she spent time living in Zambia many years ago. It will be passed down to me when my mum is no longer here as it has sentimental values and I will never be parted with it.

I have been taking Mica to a "rally-1" obedience training at the novice level. This involves doing sit, down, 360/270/turns, left turn, right turn, walk slow, walk normal or fast, weave inbetween cones, and she likes it as a challenge to do things alot of it is at the "heeling" side and than there is front and around the back to the side, too - But I think she will be going to an agility class someday - she likes to balance on and walk for 10-12 feet on logs in the water by the swamp, and also across the dried river beds in the woods, and run through the culvert at the dog park. She has also jumped through a hoop at the dog park. It seems to challenge her. She likes to be kept active. BaMicas mom

I used to always take Senji with me to the nursing home where my grandmother stayed for 1 1/2 years before she passed away. They allowed people to bring pets in to visit. Senji knew exactly where grandma's room was, even though it was down at the end of the hall. He also liked to jump into bed with grandma's roommate, who was a middle-aged stroke patient. He never got snarky or nippy at any of the other residents. It's like he knew they were old and disabled. The only time he's act up would be when he'd encounter the resident cat. :D
