Laser Light Pens and Basenjis

Basenji Talk
  • Does anyones B's like to play with the laser lights? My boxer loves them, the cat ignores them and I was curious if Basenji's liked them.

  • Our Dude goes bananas over them. It all started when he discovered the reflection from my watch in the sun. He would chase it, pounce it, and just stand wagging his tail at it until my arm got tired. So I got him a laser light and he loves that too. Just be careful not to shine it in their eyes.

  • I always keep it at least 2 feet away from Reggie, or I can clip to his collar and tape the button down, he goes bonkers over that

  • Some of mine are nuts for them…. the others could not care less....

  • Yeah it depends on the Basenji…Lance loves it, Kiya doesn't give a rip. :)

  • Just a friendly warning that you can cause a dog to develop an OCD/CCD by playing with him/her with laser lights. I accidentally did it with my dobie (long passed–RIP big boy). And I can tell, by the way my Magnum likes to chase and bite at reflections (caused by his tags), he's a likely candidate. Some dogs may be predisposed to develop this sort of behavior, but I just don't take the chance anymore. It's a very distressing behavior once it starts and just about impossible to get rid of. JMHO, of course.

That is a very good point. I would recommend that if you do play with your pets with lights, make it a special play event that only happens on occasion.

  • Sugar LOVES them. She will go after the laser or flashlights or reflections from silverware-Shadow absolutely is uninterested. The puppy Damisi likes them also. The boxer likes to play with them as well.

I love your signature "Boxenji" LOL

  • Well, when you see a large 60 lb boxer bitch running along the back of the couch-you know why she's a boxenji. The play bow, the basenji mannerisms, etc. Too funny!

  • LMAO, I know it all to well. My boxer acts like a cat (or maybe he's a funny looking Basenji) and the cat thinks she's a boxer

@planetsaver said in Basenji for me or not ?: Will be a problem to leave him alone, let's say 10 days / month an average of 9 hours a day. Also I do not want to have to much trouble with the neighbours, but I understand he can make some noise sometimes, maybe he can be trained to stay alone and not to bark that much. Why would you even think about training a hunting hound to stay home alone ? I would never let my Basenjis alone for more than 4 hours, and even that is very rare. 3 hours is absolute maximum. Like @tanza, I have sold puppies into apartment environments as long as all other boxes ticked positive. Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

There's nothing like a basenji in the works, from the way they instinctively lay with their had on the bum looking the other way ( I've never met a B that doesn't) to the way you KNOW they all rub on wet towels or play bow…it's all very endearing and in this breed you often identify traits that they all have, an insight into their genetics and their behaviors. I've never enjoyed a breed so much.

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
