Anyone familiar with patellar luxation?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hi, I'm new to the forum and wanted to see if anyone else's B girl or boy has had this condition. I understand it's fairly common to the breed and my little girl has been having symptoms on and off for a bit. The vet examined her in May again and said she may have to have surgery, sadly. She seems to be favoring it quite a bit in the last 24 hours and I think I'm going to have to take her today or tomorrow. I've been looking online, but haven't had much specific information about Basenjis and their recovery, etc. I know my little escape artist works her way around a clown collar and I am very concerned about TRYING to keep her calm and inactive (LOL), as if that's possible!!
Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Sharon & Nala

Thank you so much for your suggestions, the first test was at a 5.7 and I am awaiting the results of a second test. The initial blood test also revealed Diabetes Insipidus but I feel there is more to it than that and I see many of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism which i've read is usually results from medication for hypo and I had not given any such meds so it's a mystery how it was contracted. And we did lose her half brother in January which would explain added stress. Don

@Kananga: I'll mention next time I visit the vet. Like she had told me, it's not anything that will be a hindrance on Kananga. He just needs to be at an ideal weight to reduce any risk of aggravating his knee. Other than that he can still be 100% active without any side effects. That's why she said it was a Grade 1 and not anything above that, it's minor. Have you told his breeder? And certainly something you want to share with his breeder… and something that his breeder should take into consideration when planning any future breedings.... as in checking his sire/dam and any offspring.... Regardless of the degree, it is a defect in breeding and needs to be considered for any breeder...

Thanks guys, I did email Sue at apubasenji's and she forwarded my email to someone on the board who lives close to me. The vet I've been using is fine but I really don't think he's all that familiar with Basenji's and I would rather take my two to someone who is!!

Well Champ only had to get a cortizon shot the first time he developed allergies and now if we see him itching or biting his paws we give him a pill but honestly only had to do it twice (the pills). Good luck with your babies.
