Tayda is sooooo low energy….. problem?

    My red and white female, Tayda, is 4 years old, and she is soooooo lazy. When Lenny (1 year old brindle male) is around, they do play some, it seems more like dominance challenging to me, but mostly Tayda likes to just sleep in her crate. Lenny is off lure coursing this weekend and Tayda has done NOTHING but sleep. I take her out for walks and doesn't seem ill or anything, but when we're home, she's just completely low energy. I left the crate door open this morning when I left and when I came home, she was still sitting in the crate. She didn't even get up to see who was here! Now, I know this isn't "normal" B behavior, but should I be worried?

    Have you had her thyroid tested? Lethargy is one symptom.

    Could be that she is coming into heat…

    Also, if your weather was like ours today (really rainy), our dogs slept all day. I had to drag a couple of them out of their crates in the morning.

    oh…no....oops, I thought she was still intact for some reason. No, she shouldn't show any signs indicative of estrous

    i also wonder if it has something to do with me having been gone for a few weeks. The breeder took them while i was gone, and I swear, when I got back which was last weekend, Tayda ignored me for a few days. Like she was mad at me for leaving her. The breeder has 6 dogs of her own right now, so with my 2, there were 8. Lenny loved it… he was with his mom and dad and littermates again, and he is just a lot more playful as it is. Tayda would frequently escape from the pack and go sit in the crate by herself. I think she likes the peace and quiet.

    Has anyone else seen behavior changes after being separated from their B's for a while?

    Mine are just usually REALLY, really tired when they get back from being away. Like they will sleep soundly all day long for a couple days.

    I have 2 b's and one of them (the bitch) will sulk if I have gone a away on holiday and left her. Kwame doesn't hold it against me at all though. She is maybe just feeling a bit tired after being with so many dogs.

    My 2 definitely slept a lot when I left them at the boarders. And Topaz is just generally a lower energy dog.."comparatively" speaking that is :)

    But YOU know your dog best. If she's not herself then just take her in to the vet for some tests just for precaution. It would give everyone peace of mind. I sure hope it's nothing. Good luck to you both.

    @Rocky1: Basenjis chew,this s a fact of life. It might sound like a crazy thing to do,but I bite my pups back. It teaches them that I'M THE BOSS ! It has worked for me for the almost 36 years that I've lived with the little beastys. You can call me crazy,or wrong I don't care Works for me,and my dogs all respect me,and love me. Kathryn Wow, Kathryn - that's funny! I'm sure you just nibble a little. Their feet smell like Tostitos, so just wondering -does the rest of the dog taste like a snack??? LOL

    As some of you may recall, I had HORRIBLE problems getting Keoki to crate – took me until he was 9 mos old {and three crates!!} before he would sleep at night at all w/out screaming and shredding his bedding. For him, the issue was NOT crating, but separation. I could put him in the crate and while wasn't crazy about it, he would lie down and go to sleep as long as I was in the room w/him. As soon as I moved to leave, he would go absolutely insane. X-pen didn't work either as he tore his nose up while moving the pen across the floor. I finally bought a large crate {-a great dane could be comfy in our current crate} and we crate Keoki and Jazz together. Jazz would prefer to be alone, but she has always been a dog that rolls with the punches, so she does fine. Keoki now runs to his crate if I just say, "Go to bed". They go to bed at 10 PM and although I open the crate door at 5:30 AM, the seldom come out before 9 AM. I can crate them when guests are over if necessary {Jazz gets uncomfortable if too many people are over}, when we go out, and all night w/no complaints. {I am home all day, most days}. My family says he still whines at the window for a few minutes any time I leave the house, which is funny to me because he doesn't seem to be particularly attached to me when we're all home together although both dogs seem to know that I am THE MAMA and they behave best and listen most to me. I wonder how often the dog's anxious behavior in crates is like Keoki - not a crating problem, but a separation anxiety issue.

    Couple of things: First have his Thyroid Checked. I am not one that thinks thats the answer to every things - but it is easy to test and is a quick fix if that is the cause.     thanks to all your suggestions. this is the second day/night now and she has peed outside. She has started to go towards the door when she needs to go to do a pee, so i've let her out..stayed with her until she does (which has been very quick, it used to take 5 or so minutes but now only 5 seconds..which is great!! She gets alot of praise when she does and she is quickly allowed back inside. Fingers crossed it stays that way!! Yes all bedroom & toilet doors shut..i learnt not to let her out of our sight as she is very sneaky??? One more question which i find odd..why is there a need for her to clean up after herself after peeing on the floor or her bed??
