Stinky Feet!!

Basenji Talk

  • Remember…. dogs sweat through their feet.... and honestly... I have never had them have "stinky" feet unless they have gotten into something?

  • I have heard the feet smell is everything from Popcorn to Burnt toast!

  • LOL, it's making me laugh…when we had to put our two previous Bs to sleep after 17 years last year i used to smell their collars and leashes and cry because their smell was on them. we are so happy to have two more now, and we say "ahhhhhhh, that nice B smell". heh

  • All this talk about how theyre feet smell. My boys feet smell like corn. I
I love the way B's smell you really get spoiled, not like when you go to a house that has a basset hound or similar oh gross!

  • Duke's feet smell like fresh cut grass, Daisy's feet smell like dirt. Well, what do you expect when one is always bare footed?

  • LOL, well today Jack got a bath with dish soap (apple smell) and i was so happy because it made them less STINKY!!! (but they still stink) I so have a stronger sense of smell, but my hubby said its pretty bad too!! so…WELL my son is due sept. 14th. We are going to name him Aiden Patrick Hayes. My pregnancy is going pretty well. I get the leg pains, headaches and OF course the heartburn can be unbearable at times!! the belly is HEAVY i LOVE to sleep on my back but i cant anymore, so its hard for me to sleep. I also get really bad heart palpitations. but my Dr says its normal. Thanks for asking tho!!

  • Less than 3 months and well . . . your life will be forever changed. Jack's feet will will hardly be a memory once you get a whiff of baby's head and breath - like heaven's scent. So happy for you both (or should I say 3?)

  • Max's feet were never stinky. But my german shepherd mix (Pepper) had stinky feet. I think it was just from sweating there. It would be so funny–Pepper would be laying down relaxing, and Max would lay down by her. Then he would sniff her feet and curl his lip (he always curled his lip like Elvis when he didn't like the smell of something--as if to say "phewie!!"). Then he would smell his feet--I really think to check and make sure they didn't stink like hers!! And he was always satisfied with the smell (or lack thereof) of his feet. I never minded Pepper's stinky feet.....that was just the way she was--even shortly after a bath. I don't think you should put any harsh type of cleanser/deodorant on the feet--because that skin between the toes is awfully delicate. In fact--I'm careful about any type of shampoo, etc., I use because B skin is so delicate.

  • Hahaha. I can just see everyone smelling their B's feet now!

All is normal with your pregnancy then? A tip-eat smaller more frequent meals, and eat lighter foods-that should help the heartburn. With your leg pain, put your feet against a cold wall, floor, etc. Headaches? Move more slowly, when you move too quick blood rushes.

My daughter is pregnant as well, I told her I'd rather have the four legged kind, but her's will have to do!

    She laughs at me.

  • YUP :D I was sniffing away too LOL LOL…but nope ours are not bad at all. I guess cuz we're always wiping feet & they're always grooming their feet too!!

    My favorite scent in the world is a babies head! My favorite thing in the world is to hold a baby close, rocking, humming, and just breathing in the baby scent {clean diaper, of course! LOL}. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. {I think I told you my niece is expecting her first in Sept. also! I can't wait! I get to to be the babysitter! She's having a boy,too}

My baby is 8 yrs old now though, and somehow an 8yo boy's head just never smells quite as sweet. ;)

The sense of smell is often heightened during pregnancy, so maybe after Aiden is born the feet won't bother you so much. Maybe.

  • I hope so. lol!! I definantly think Jack just sweats… Theres not much i can do but keep them clean. lol. and deal with the stink. I cant wait for my baby Aidan to be born, I am nervous tho, its our first child and family is so far away. I know we will be OK. I am a daycare teacher and he was raised with 8 brothers and sisters (hes the 2nd oldest) so we have experience. but its still a little unnerving thinking about my husband as a daddy. Hes like a kid himself sometimes, well so am i. The big scary thing for me is definatly the labor, and how thats going to go for me...I pray all will be well. 28 weeks today!!

I would bet that the fact you are expecting might have something to do with his feet smell bothering you….??

…thinking about my husband as a daddy. Hes like a kid himself sometimes...

I always add one more to the actual number of kids I have to account for my husband! Seriously, he'll be a great father! The pain of labor is forgotten when you get that sweet little package in your arms! All will be just fine…be sure to keep us posted!

  • Sometimes the "kid-like" guys make the best Daddies – if they are child-like, not childish! -- because they will play with the kids and really enjoy it. For some it's a real chore, and that's not good.

As for labor, you'll get through it just fine...I mean, there's no other way out, is there? LOL I did it six times, and I'd do it six more w/out question. Aidan will be worth every second of it! Just wait and see! You have never loved anyone or anything as much as you are going to love that boy from the moment you look at him and it really sinks in that you're his mommy, He is YOURS!!! and you will be willing to sacrifice everything for him. Labor is such a small price to pay, really.

    I'm excited for you!

:D LOL - you got that right! I have a 9 yr old boy who's head I smell to convince him by the look on my face he needs a bath. (Yes - I still smell his head, like it or not.) But after the bath/shower & shampoo, I almost always tell him to let me smell how clean he got his hair. :) (can't help myself)

Funny how a thread can veer off topic! :D LOL - You gotta love the babies too! ;)

  • LOL< That's how I convince my 8 yo to take a bath, and how I check to see if he actually used shampoo afterwards. LOL

yes, Captain Jack's mom, in just a few short years you too will have a son who prefers dirt to soap! ;-)

  • HAHA. Good im looking forward to it, lol

Basenjis are very catlike in that they groom themselves and they like to be clean and their beds clean. BRAT.com has a lot of excellent information about the breed and their quirks. Be sure to check it out.

@sharronhurlbut: Fran, use baby wipes on his feet. I use it on my b's. Sharron - glad to see your reference to baby wipes - I have often wondered if I could use them on my girls when they get their feet and legs nasty at the park - I thought if I could get most of the mess off them it would be easier for them to keep themselves sparkly white - but - then I thought maybe it would be bad for them to lick whatever baby wipes leave on - what do you think?

@crystalncody: LOL, I had to try it as well, and Cody had a simlar response, only his expression was more like, "Can't you see I'm trying to take a nap? Jeeze!" Then he got up, circled, and faced the other direction with a huff! They love to sigh. We are such inconveniences to them.

A quick vet check may be a good idea… if anything, it'll reassure you it's not a health issue or allergy. Do you provide something like a stuffed kong for him to lick at while he's crated? Stuffed FROZEN kong toys work wonders for crated dogs. the toy can be stuffed with tons of things (i.e. peanut butter, cream cheese, kibble, wet dog food, chicken, tuna, even jam a few dog biscuits in it...) it would give him something to focus on besides his back feet. Another way to help (if it is an anxiety/nervous behavior) is Rescue Remedy (or another Bach remedy). these are natural extracts, that work over TIME to help ease anxieties.
