  • Hi out there -

Just found your site. I lost my basenji, Kyro, to sudden congestive heart failure almost 6 years ago and have only recently gotten to the place where I can bear the thought of adopting another. I've been parked at the computer for days trying (thus far in vain) to find the one with my name on it, which is how I stumbled upon you. I smiled as I read your posts and remembered Kyro in all her stubborn, willful, counter-surfing, house-marauding, "basenjiness". She was a great dog and I look forward to doing it all again.

  • I am from Western PA and know of several breeders who have pups or an older dog that needs a good home. If you are interested let me know.

  • You can look for breeders at www.basenji.org and then to breeder listings (please go to a responsible breeder and make sure that the sire and dam have been DNA tested for Fanconi)… or you can go to www.basenjirescue.org

I am most interested in giving an older dog a good home but would also like the names of the breeders, just in case… Thank you much!

  • I got my present girl from a basenji rescue group, she was 6 yrs old when I got her and she will be 12 yrs this summer. I think it nice to give an older dog a second chance. You miss the cute puppy years but you also miss the puppy years.

What a sweet face! Thank you for taking her in, she needs a forever home. As Pat indicated, unless you have info on the parents being clear, or at least one clear, she should be tested for Fanconi asap.

dear muffen hi and welcome :) rescuing a dog is a wonderful thing, i hope this is a good option for you. i know brat has many dogs in florida that are looking for their forever homes. they do a great job of matching dogs to the right owner. disclaimer if you have small children it might be a good idea to get a puppy from a reputable breeder. luckily, puppy season will be here soon and there are a couple of really great breeders in florida.

Luzambo, I too had one pass last March. After that I was left with one and said once he passed, I was going to be done with dogs – too much of work and emotional strain. Yep, I was going to be free to... well, to do something. Then I found a little girl related to Brie just 2 weeks later and 6 months later I have yet another. Yes, they're a lot of work at times, but so is most everything in life. I love having them around and the house would be often boring otherwise. I'm sure Pharaoh and my Brie are hanging out in their private club looking down on us saying "what are you guys doing down there?" And with a signature like yours, I don't think you'll be waiting long. Welcome to the forum!
