    Thanks for the info. When I went on the website, I was alittle shocked. I had no idea that is what a bully stick is.:eek: I'll order some..I'm sure Lillie will love them.

    I thought they were originally tendons too when I first bought them then I read on here what they really were and could not stop laughing.

    Zahra loves these things though they make her happy and I guess I will just have to get over the thought.

    Oh, I meant to post about what Zahra likes to rip up - Berber carpet she has destroyed the carpet in this house.

    She also chewed through the electrical cord to the lights in the ground in the backyard. Thankfully she didn't get zapped although I don't know how because they were plugged into the timer. She could have been turned into a Poodle! She is also saved because I don't think DH has still realized that they are gone (He was gone for 8 months and hasn't figured out that they are gone yet, I removed the timer from the side out of the house and dug up all of the electrical wire and threw it out).

    Hey, I couldn't believe they were bull ????? until I sent Merrick's an email and they told me what they were. So I got it from the horses mouth, duh, Bull's, but I gotta say Sahara loves them so I will get them for her. I would not leave my baby with anything to chew on while I am out. I like to be around and check on her when she is chewing on a bully stick, rawhide or anything else that requires intense chewing.

    Jodie, I wanted to add to make sure Lillie is well exercised. Dash chews mostly when he has not got to run that day. Other wise he is passed out asleep.

    Jodie…yes I too was going to suggest a good work out. They more tired they are the less likely to chew things.

    You could also put Vicks VapoRub or use a solid deodorant on the stuff you don't want chewed & it usually stops them from chewing that item.

    BTW-I'm in NJ...not too far from Staten Island!!

    Well, i guess im lucky for now, Jack isnt interested in ripping anything except HIS blanket, and ONLY when hes angry or REALLY excited (when we play). and he gets corrected when he does that (and i catch him) lol. He does do somthing a little weird in my opinion; When my hubby or me gets out of the shower, Jack likes to rub on the floor wherever we dry off. (im sure its for the smells) but still i hate it, its weird. He also gets these random Surges of energy and does a little jump circle thing or rolls hid head in a circle. (LOL) hes so weird sometimes, MUST be a Basenji thing, I wouldnt understand…

    Just be thankful that when you get out of the shower he doesn't try to lick you dry like Sugar-mmmmm, MOM, mmmmm, you're wet, mmmm, must dry, mmmm.

    Who needs an electric shredder when you have a Basenji!!! Blackjack likes to do paper - she pulls the newspaper or mail and makes sure to thrash it around, then shred it to confetti. She's my guard against identity theft.

    It might be easier to list what theyu dont like to shred-

    Tissues have to be favorites with use though. They will sneak up behind you and take them right out of your pocket. Little theives!

    OH, dryer sheets!!! and Stuffed animals! Thats Jacks favorite. (great when my son is born i might as well not buy him anything stuffed. Jack doesnt know whats his and whats not when it comes to that…)

    Most of the time my 2 furkids only chew their toys or bones but occasionally Mom gives them a papertowel roll or some paper to shred. They are so lucky:D . but today we weren't paying attention and Shelby and Vince decided Dad's hat needed shredding. Of course neither of them is guilty of the crime. They gave us the "not me" look. They truly are toddlers in dog suits.:)

    Senji usually only shreads things when he's frustrated. Mostly it's paper napkins or kleenex. Lately he's been getting into the closet where I keep the gift bags and wrapping paper. He really likes the tissue paper in the gift bags. For Christmas, or for someone's birthday, he likes to "help" you open your present. :D

    Damisi will take the newspaper right off the table-even if she has to jump onto a chair and manoever it. Also paper towels off the kitchen counter.

Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

    My basenji mix Layla loves to run around in very high plants and shrubs like foxtail. Could it be that it reminds her of something similiar like in Africa?

    I drove 20 or so minutes each way to my friend's horse far. Not one day did we miss seeing one or more dead dogs on the roads. Too many dogs in shelters picked up from being lost; or hit by cars. While my Rottweilers and first basenji were solid off leash, they only place they got to do it was at my friend's farm. And they weren't just turned out, I was out with them. In the old days, almost all dogs ran loose. The norm... and if they died or were lost... well, get another one. Many died. I quit talking to people about it. They say "they want to be loose" and I say "so do toddlers and 3 to 5 yr olds... I still don't open the front door and send them on the world. " They get mad, I get mad, nothing accomplished. We all take risks and avoid others. Unleashed is one of my "no" areas. And rawhide. Absolutely dogs raised in a village in Africa are not the same as here. I think most dogs don't get enough exercise and mind stimulation. When you do that with an intelligent breed like basenjis, you're going to get unwanted behaviors. You may want to read up on Dr Jo Thompson's work, as she also lived in Africa with these dogs. What wonderful experiences those of you who go to see where they came from.

    Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

    Shaye loves the sun - will lie out in the heat for as long as she can get it. Gemma, being a basenji/sheltie mix and furrier, lies on the cool tiles on the porch, and when the sun hits her, she heads for the A/C. At the beach, Shaye lies in the hot sand in the sun until I get her into the shade, and because she is also a heat seeking thing, wants to be totally under covers to sleep at night. Stands to reason the tris and b/w's would absorb more heat and not prefer it as much as the r/w's do.
