Kayaking Basenji

Show Off Your Dog

  • This may be the first and last pictures of Zahra kayaking - she hated it AGAIN and kept trying to jump out of the kayak and swim to the shore. Looks like she will be spending time at the Doggie resort or with friends while we go out with Chase (our Puggle who loves the water)

What I love about this photo is that she has this look on her face that makes me think that she is begging DH to save her and take her home. Poor Zahra. :(

This trip today confirmed it for me - B's are not water dogs.

  • Poor Zahra, you can send her down to Carolina and me and Sahara will take care of the sweetheart, bad mommy making a Basenji go on the water. Do I see a lifepreserver on her. We took Sahara on the river with us last summer, of course we bought her a lifepreserver, it was soooooo cute on her. We are planning on taking her this year soon as well, she tolerated it good. DH got in the water with her and I put her over, she stayed real close to him but I think she liked it. It was very hot that day and I think she liked getting cooled off. Pictures were good even though Zahra looked miserable, haha!!!!!

  • I know, I am really mean - when I put the life jackets on them today I could not stop laughing. That probably sounds horrible. :D

I may have to drop her off at your house, you are not that far. She would probably be much happier than she was today. Can't wait to see you guys on the 24th!

  • Poor Zahra :( Mom..B's in water???  how could you?!!

  • Cute photos! She was very brave to try this out, but now you know her opinion of the matter… :o)

  • Great pics - I've often thought of taking Nala out on Lake Champlain or to Lake George - I love those little PFDs for doggies! Keep at it!!

  • Jenn - I'm a little curious . . . Did Zahra make any noises out on the water? Though her eyes are locked on your DH, she looks like she's being a sport about it. Really cool pictures - Thanks for sharing your adventure!

Well unless there was something in the water that she wanted… like say a "duck".. think you would have a complete different expression... :)

  • LOL, that is awesome! Well you tried it once and that is all it takes. Good try. I am sure if the kayak was filled with dog food it would have been an easy ride:)

ChaseandZarhrasmom, we are taking Dash Canoeing in a couple weeks, where did you get the lifepreserver? Do they just have them at PetSmart?

Hi everyone, Thanks for all of your replies! Rex just had his first vet visit (first with me at least), and he was given a clean bill of health. The vet that I saw also agrees with a lot of you that he looks like a Min Pin more than a Basenji, but he is likely still mixed with something because he's a bit too big to be a pure Min Pin. I've looked at a few DNA Dog Breed tests online, and they seem to range in price and in quality. It seems like some of the cheaper (~$50) tests are fake, but they go all the way up to almost $250 for the higher quality ones. Do any of you have experience with these DNA tests / have a brand you found reputable? I'll be sure to post the results of any of the tests with this forum! Thanks again, and Rex is doing really great in his new home!! [image: 1559586518913-img_3707-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586546977-img_3720-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586568474-img_3708-resized.jpg]

She is really cute though I don't see Basenji. Like Shirley said, only a DNA can tell you much for certain.

There are now DNA tests available that can pinpoint what your dog might be genetically. Some companies can only do 30 or so breeds but most advertise well over 150. Why should you care - well it is a way to know what sorts of things healthwise you should be on the lookout for as many breeds have unique health issues. I was at the vet last year and there was a puggle there with an eye issue - the owners shared what it was and it is common in beagles. They then went on to say that they had trouble with the other eye before and it was an issues specific (although not exclusive) to pugs. So much for hybrid vigor. Darling picture though - good luck

Thank you very much for the info. I will have to try the time out. He was crate trained as far as being house broken, but now when I put brownie in the crate all he does is whine.. I do have 2 older dogs. one that plays with him and the other, well he just growls at brownie. The mother that was there when I got Brownie was a white shepard, maybe that is where the broad nose comes in.
