Loved agility class

Basenji Training
  • SO I took Champ to his first agility class and it was wonderful. We had so much fun. I was so very proud of him for doing such a great job. He thought it was more of a social class but he'll get there. He's also doing better at the nipping and I have been working on basic commands, well really just sit. One day at a time.

  • That's Great CHAMP :D woo hoo!! Where did you take the class?? I'm in the general area & I want to start C3PO on agility too!

  • I went to Huntington in Long Island but I'm sure there's one close to you. I went in one of the threads that contained a list of agility classes that you can pick close to home.

  • Sounds like you had a great time. I have been working with my basenjis in agility for just over a year and they love it. It is great to work with them as a team.

  • I'm so glad you brought this up. I've been wanting to get Duke into this kind of training or lure coursing. He would be excellent (I think) b/c he luvs-luvs running and jumping.

    I found the link: http://www.cleanrun.com/

OK…Took Duke to an agility class! For me - too much commitment at this particular time - training Daisy in her Puppy Obedince class at PetSmart is priority. We went soon after the previous posting. I knew I would have to commit 100 percent to succeed with Duke. I know for sure that Duke is a shoe-in for this sport. Daisy is not - too much beagle. But I am going to pursue it with Duke b/c he will be happy doing it. :) Mom's just know! :)

  • I set up some obstacles in my back yard ,just basic stuff,a piece of 2x8 between 2 sawhorses with ramps on both sides ,some plastic boxes to jump over, and some metal sign posts for slalom.Maggie likes them so much that if I'm not home she stands on the sawhorse bridge to look around or lays down on it. p.s I'm new in here so I am not sure what I am doing

  • I was thiking of getting my pup into agility since she loves to run like the wind, maybe lure coursing too. How old would be the perfect age?

Well, that was a bust, turns out the course wasn't fully enclosed alone, too many other dogs to even pay attention. She did have a blast with all the other happy dogs! So it was still a fun outing!

You might want to look into the Jumping Chollas Agility Club; they are a nice group of people, and use overall good training methods for basenjis. I can't think of anyone off hand training their basenji for agility in Phoenix, but a couple of us from Tucson show up and run our dogs at the JCAC trials. The Phoenix Field and Obedience Club does a great job putting on obedience trials, and they do offer training classes. I can't verify the training methods used, so you would have to check and see if they are agreeable to you and how you want to acheive your goals with your basenji. There are a lot of nice people in that club as well, so just getting to know some of them can lead you to training classes or instructors with whom you should be comfortable. Again, I don't know of anyone in Phoenix actively showing basenjis in obedience right now, but we Tucsonans show up and show off our kids in Rally and regular Obedience. Good luck with your furkid! @bernicem77: I took Luke to his first puppy class tonight, and WOW. He would not listen to me at all. He was more concerned with what the other dogs were doing than what we were supposed to be doing. What kind of treats did you guys use when trainning your B's? Like I said in my previous post, this is similar to what happened with me. Zoni had to get comfortable in the room, sometimes took her about 10 minutes or so. After a while she got used to it but was still very interested in everyone else, particularly if we were moving around the room. Really practice on attention exercises at home and that will help. I went through a range of different treats, and I think I found for class the smellier was better for getting her attention. Although not smelly, beef lung worked really well for me too and it is easy to use and break up into little pieces. Little biscuit-type treats weren't high value enough for her in class.

@renaultf1: Again…you're lucky to have such an option! :D:D I'm envious. Well, it's also a "you get what you pay for" situation. All of the teachers are volunteers so you don't necessarily get what I would call quality instruction necessarily by everyone. I'm excited about taking the agility and rally classes in the future.

I have been a bit of chicken about entering a competition. I think I am going to give one a try either this May or June. I am going to start in CPE because their level 1 should be a good place for me the novice handler and Rio my novice dog.
