Basenji Training
  • I was thinking it may be a good idea to take Alani to basic obedience classes. She's a year old so it would be a little different than taking a puppy. Does anyone know if the PetSmart training classes are any good or if I should go a different route?

  • I sent you a PM about a training resource in CO. good luck with whatever training you decide on!

  • Here is a link to a group called the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. There isn't much a requirement to join this group, but most people who do use mostly positive reinforcement training techniques…or use the least aversive methods first. Anyone listed there who has the letters CPDT after their name had to complete a set of fairly rigorous requirements to attain that title...so they would have some proof that they are qualified...not to say that the other people aren't these people have just gone to the extent of making it formal.

    I hope this link works:

  • I am working with an APDT trainer, they are very expensive if you have them come to your house one on one, at least this one is. She is very good, but it is hard to get my girl who was abused to allow the woman inside. I have stopped having her here for the time being, and may pursue classes when I get my girl socialized better! Carol

You might want to look into the Jumping Chollas Agility Club; they are a nice group of people, and use overall good training methods for basenjis. I can't think of anyone off hand training their basenji for agility in Phoenix, but a couple of us from Tucson show up and run our dogs at the JCAC trials. The Phoenix Field and Obedience Club does a great job putting on obedience trials, and they do offer training classes. I can't verify the training methods used, so you would have to check and see if they are agreeable to you and how you want to acheive your goals with your basenji. There are a lot of nice people in that club as well, so just getting to know some of them can lead you to training classes or instructors with whom you should be comfortable. Again, I don't know of anyone in Phoenix actively showing basenjis in obedience right now, but we Tucsonans show up and show off our kids in Rally and regular Obedience. Good luck with your furkid! @pacificNWbasenji: Thanks for all of the great suggestions. Quercus: I will try opportunistic clicking/rewarding when he is nesting, hopefully it will help reinforce the desired behavior rather than confuse him. Agilebasenji: Surprisingly enough my guys do not roll on damp towels, very unbasenji like of them. They do insist on grabbing towels, running off with them and promptly killing them by giving them a great shake before stealing the stoled goods from each other. They ignore them during our training sessions because I have taught them 'on your bed' where they will run and place themselves on the area I point at (dog bed, place on couch, towel or blanket laid out) Thanks for the advice. Clay: Matter of fact we just began targeting on Saturday as well, with the nose touch. Dude does have a great high five so I think that paw touch won't be difficult. Tonight I began directing him onto the towel and doing a low five and click/rewarding when he would give the five and his paw would land on the towel. Lvoss: That's what i'll try next as soon as I can get him to exhibit a bit of the behavior. Thanks! Cool. Let us know how it works out.

Thanks for the info on the Dremels. Benji's claws must have just been kept short by pavement walking then because i never had to give them any attention .

Thanks all for his well wishes, he might need them. So far he is eager, if treats are available, to learn new things, so I am very hopeful.
