Our Basenji and our new pup…

Behavioral Issues
  • Hi All,

You may remember me talking about Base my Basenji who is SUPER Dominant and agressive… He is getting better with us - he still gets agitated and bites on the odd occasion through frustration - but over all he is a hundred times better than before. We are using the methods that we see on The Dog Whisperer and its really working for us... (we just have to be more persistant than out B is stuburn... which is VERY hard work)

I would just like to read about your experiences with adding a new pup into the house with your B's... We got a 9week old Hungarian Viszla on Friday - But Base just seams to ignore him... and when he does have a sniff etc - it normally ends in a growl- a snap and the pup in a submissive position... I am thinking that this cannot go on forever and our Basenji is just working on the thinking that ... maybe if i ignore it it will go away... He is jealous - but we are ensuring that the dogs get their own time and affection and that we are setting the pack order up - Us, the Basenji then the pup...
*We also introduced them on neutral teritory and went for a walk together before they were allowed in the house together...

I'd like to hear your thoughts...

  • <_>

This is normal. Just let him come around on his own time...if you interfere, it will probably make things worse._

  • I agree- There's always an adjustment period when you introduce new dogs to the same home. Ours took about a week before all the snarks went away. Now it's just wild playtime ALL the time!! :) Good luck!! Sounds like you're on the right track!

  • Since it sounds like you have two males, one already dominate and agressive, please be very careful with another male in the home…. while the pup is still a pup you might not have problems, but as he grows you might. especially if the new male pup gets tired of being made to be the "under dog"....... and yes there is a period of adjustment... but things can get out of hand pretty quickly

  • Hi Thanks for your ideas -

Things were pretty good this morning…we almost had a little bit of a play together!!! I guess only time will tell... and we will get there...

  • Sounds like you're working through things well enough. Keep walking them both together so that he keeps associating the pup with the pack & the pup can make the connection as well. Try to keep them REALLY TIRED so they don't have any excess energy to take out on each other.

The other thing you may want to do is instill some positive associations with your B and the little pup. Every time you have them together & your B plays nice praise him & give him some REAAAAALLLY good treats. Only give him these special treats when he's around the pup & behaving nicely. You'll be putting into his head….nice pup & I get treats!!! He'll start to look for the pup to get some treats.

  • Kate i have a 2 year old Vizsla ans a ! year old Basenji when i 1st got my B she was very in charge. But now they can not be apart! My male V is very understanding V in a whole are very easy going laid back dogs . My in laws and husban is from hungary and say that V will take a back seat to almost any other dog so i feel that you will not have a problem later on. Just like w/ other V's give him 100 kisses a day and they will be happy

Most of my friends who end up getting a second dog from my breeder go for the opposite gender. Well, pretty much everyone! Since you are flexible about the gender that might be the way to go! I knew I wanted two boys (and maybe a third some day!) and the breeder had no problem letting me have two because A) he was my third dog from him and B) he knew I could handle it. I can't wait to see pictures when you get that new baby!

Congratulations on the future new addition. Boy/girl is a good combination. As others have advised let them meet on neutral ground and take them for a long walk together. For every good interaction praise both inordinately. As Curlytails says don't rush it. Keep us posted, please and best wishes to you all.

@skookum9: Sorry for the misunderstanding. I guess I never thought about anyone out there thinking that anyone could suggest lifting a dogs weight by its ear, I guess I'll have to rethink the lack of common understanding in the care of dogs. I will no longer be posting any input on this forum so there will no longer be any misunderstanding of what I write. I will sit back and watch for a spell to see if there is anything that I can possibly learn from this forum as I had initially hoped. If not, I will simply remove myself from here entirely. There certainly have been a few of you here that have been helpful and I do appreciate it and I give my most sincere thanks to those of you who did but I am not interested in getting anymore ridicule about training that one person cannot comprehend. I do wish you all the best but I think I would be best to stay away from this forum for the most part, other than to listen to what others think anyway. I will continue to love and care for my beautiful little girl but I am just not cut out for this place. I think it might be an over-reaction to leave the forum because we misunderstood what you wrote. Forums are a good place to get lots of different perspectives, and different views. There are quite a few regular posters here who have lots of experience training Basenjis, and we generally agree on the best methods for training dogs…that doesn't mean we don't welcome people with different experiences and opinons. That being said, I feel it is important to clarify advice given on a public forum, to make sure that novice owners/trainers don't think a piece of potentially dangerous advice is a generally accepted technique. Don't feel like you need to leave, or be silent :)

Basenji people are dedicated to our breed, and we all seem to be very responsible. Basenjis don't like all other dogs, so we socialize them the best we can and keep them on the leash so they can't attack other dogs or sprint off after a squirrel and get killed by a car. But there are still dog owners out there who just don't understand the principles of responsible dog ownership. You don't just worry about dogs attacking each other but people as well. I posted the story about how I was attacked by a doberman and nearly killed several years ago. If not for the mailman I wouldn't even be here to talk about it. The owner said he didn't think Raggs would ever attack anybody, so he would just open the door and let him out on his own to go potty. I'm so glad we basenji owners are more responsible than some folks out there who just don't seem to get it.

I agree with Catherine, socialization is a must, but it depends on the personality of the individual dog. When we had 4, they all slept on the bed together and ran together and rarely did we have any problems. We added a puppy and things were still going ok, just really crowded. However, one day our youngest girl decided she was all grown up and didn't want to be bossed around anymore by our 'wanna-be' alpha. Neither of them was a true alpha. We managed to defuse the situation, but a month later it happened again. The girls could never be together again. In fact, the tri developed a predjudice against all red girls after that! Both girls were terrific with people and with Basenji males and even with males and females of other breeds. I had 2 intact males, brothers, who stayed together with absolutely no problem for almost 4 years until one went to another home. They even got along during season. Terry
