Found a Besenji/Terrier Mix

Basenji Rescue
  • At least that is what I think he is. I found him wandering in our neighborhood with no id, no chip, no collar, no tatoo. He was in the neighborhood for about two weeks and it was obvious that he was not going home to anyone since he was losing weight.

He is a very sweet young dog. I took him to our local Veterinary Hospital to see if he was micro-chipped. He was not. In order to leave him there to kennel, he had to be up to date on shots, etc. I couldn't just take him to our local animal shelter. It is a small county run operation that can only hold dogs for 72 hours and they don't have the staff to do adoptions, etc.

I decided to go ahead and pay for this dog's shots and get him tested for worms. He tested positive for Hookworm and early positive for heartworm. He is now de-wormed for the hook, has all his shots and will be neutered tomorrow. I am currently out of funds so I can't start his heartworm treatment yet.

I would love to adopt him but I don't have a fenced in yard and I am a full time care taker for an elderly parent.

I have been trying to find a home for this sweet dog. He is around a year old. and is a brownish/red and white color. He was obviously abused as he is very shy around unexpected loud noises and raised hands.

He hasn't barked except for once which was a breathy bark and he has only whined a few times. He is very quiet and every time he sees me when I come to visit, he runs to me and wants to cuddle.

We are calling him BeeGee and my avatar is a pic of him. I found this forum and joined so I could see if there are any rescue groups near me. I will be posting more in the rescue forum.

I have fallen hook, line and sinker for this fellow and want him to find a great home.

I have sent a message to the BRAT email and am waiting for a reply from them, but found the forum and thought that this might be another place to tell others about this sweet one year old and see if there is anyone near me who can help or who would like to give this fellow a good home.
Oh yes, I live in the southeastern part of North Carolina in Bladen County.

    Thanks!

  • I would also list him with Petfinders.
They go a very good job of showing folks animals who need rehoming.

  • Cheryl ended up keeping Beegee, but we haven't heard from Cheryl in a while?? Are you still here?? How is Beegee doing with his heartworm treatment??

@dcmclcm4: Since she was found as a stray, no knowledge if she has been around children. When she gets overly excited to see someone she can be mouthy since she is still young so probably no real young children. I get her to sit, direct her focus away from my hand and give her a nylabone chew toy. This usually works. She is learning how to sit with the hand signal for sit and almost has it learned. She is a fairly easy pill giver as she has not spit out a pill yet! She did a playbow today to the Bs to try to get them to play. My two middle Bs, Arnie-10 years old and Bambi-8 years old play with her. She can bark but is not overly barky. I feel she does need more socialization and I am planning on doing that this coming week when the weather is better. If you need additional information or have specific questons about her, let me know. Jennifer I will Jennifer, my friend is seriously considering it :)

I would try to find a vet that is interested in learning about B's or know's about B's. It took me a while to find a vet that would listen to ME and not the average shoot em up/shove it down mentality. Try a warm bath for the BM. As for the frontline and intercept they should be able to be held off. I don't use flea med-my B's don't tend to get fleas. If it's for the heart worm only wait a few days til she feels better and then give it to her if you need to use it where you are. I know here we only use it til November. If you want a basic food, as Sharon said-chicken and rice is the easiest on the tummy. You may want to make your own for the moment-boiled chicken and rice. Arlene
