Baby on the way,a little worried

  • So im due in Sept. im worried because Jack does well with children, i do childcare in my home. (even mean toddlers who are rather violent with jack) BUT since we recued him, its only been me my hubby and jack. hes SPOILED to say the least, and def. pampered. so im a little concerned about how he will react when the baby comes…i mean he will be bumped a notch...any ideas:confused:

  • We adopted our Basenji, Rocky, two years before we started having kids. Having read and been told that they are not the best "family dogs" (translate families with kids), we were a little worried too. However, a couple guidelines and tips we picked up along the way:

    1. Before mom & baby come home, have dad bring something with the baby smell on it. Our hospital let my husband bring one of the first blankets our daughter was wrapped in after she was born home. Put it on the floor and let the dog(s) do what they want with it. When Mom & baby come home, have dad carry the baby and let mom greet dog first. Put baby on floor and let the dog sniff her/him. (This works best if baby is in infant carrier the first time. It limits the dog stepping on baby and allows for quick recovery if signs are not good). Congrats! Introductions are done!

    2. Make a point of spending time praising your dog when you catch him in good behavior.

    3. Make some one on one time with each of you and the dog. Let one take the baby and the other take the dog for a walk… alone. Good for parent, good for dog. (old adage "tired dog = good dog" also applies here).

    4. Count on your basenji being VERY interested in the diapers and anything to deal with milk/formula. They have an uncanny knack of pulling dirty clothes out of hampers. A locking diaper pail (diaper geanie or some such device) is a godsend. Trust me, you do not want old baby diaper all over the nursery. Also invest in a closed (as in no holes on sides either) laundry basket. They can pull things out thru those holes too and make all those lovely baby clothes into nice rags.

Just rmember it is an adjustment for everyone and if you can include your pup in the quiet times, and manage to carve out times specifically for him, it will all go well. Yes, he will resent you forever for adding someone new to the household without consulting him first. Trust me though. They forgive you once baby starts learning how to throw food off the high chair. =-)

    Good luck!

  • I agree with everything RockysWoman said here. Having just done this three years ago with four (at the time) dogs, everything she said holds true.

The reaction of our four ranged from interested to couldn't care less. But they all were very keen on letting me know the baby was crying (as if I couldn't hear it myself!).

The most delicate time for us came when Ethan started walking, not when we brought him home. Our two oldest basenjis, which had lived many years as a 'child free' home (and are a little more high strung than our subsequent basenjis) were really nervous when the baby would approach them. We made areas were they could retreat from him, and in time they became used to him. At this point, they are very comfortable with him, love the fact that he sneaks food to them, intentionally and not, and even try to initate play with him (something I thought I would never see two years ago). Our younger ones have been totally comfortable with him all along, and they enjoy him immensely!

So, it will be fine, as long as you continue to let Captain Jack know you still love him. Make sure you reinforce 'kid being here means good stuff happens'…don't reprimand him for interacting with the baby, or he will think 'this baby is nothing but trouble'.

  • Thank You all very much!!! this is very helpful!

  • My brother and his wife got Senji when they got married. He was about a year old when they had the first baby. He was very jealous and frustrated with the baby. I tried to pay lots of attention to him when I was visiting. There were times when I'd try to play with the baby and Senji would come over and sit right in my lap to prevent me from holding the baby. After they had their 2nd child, Senji wasn't as jealous of her, but he was seriously frustrated and started getting destructive. They ended up giving Senji to me when he was 5 1/2. He's 11 now and gets lots of attention not only from me, but from "Grandma" and "Grandpap".

  • I've had 2 kids since getting Nala, she was just under 1 year old when Natalie came along and almost 5 when Logan arrived. The only time we've had any issue was when Natalie wanted to get into her bed with her in front of the fire. She made what we call an "ugly noise", which I now know is a warning or protest noise, but never any teeth baring or snapping at all.
I think if you read all the above advice, all will be just fine!!

  • WELL i went to the ob today and they thought i might have twins!! but the U/S showed only one GORGIOUS healthy baby!!! hehe

I grew up with birds, hamsters, cats, dog, rabbits and we had hives of honey bees. Never anything wrong with me all my life even got lucky never stepped on a bee. My kids have cats, dogs, bird and my daughter never worn pretty little dress cause she would go right under a car with her dad and get grease all over her. Dirt and my son go hand in hand. They have been healthy. Now as far as walking to school I could not do that. Been far to many kids never got to school to many out there take kids. So my kids have never been allowed to walk to school. One mile there but anything could happen. People that usually do not want animals have there little fancy house and do not want the hair or the dirt. We have a friend who has three children just got a puppy about month ago poor puppy. Puppy got over gate in wash room and well had fun while they were at work. She just about lost it aniamls are better off without being that kind of home I told her so. Sad news her husband just went to work for Science Diet and they have a animal day once a month and they told him it was important they had a animal. He lied when got job and said he did. Now there is a puppy my heart really goes out to. Rita Jean

Guys, thanks so much for all your help! We are absolutely making progress! Bassit isn't exactly happy to go into 'puppy jail' (the gated off area where we keep her when we're mopping floors or something/not at home), but the screaming has lessened HUGELY. 2 walks a day, kong full of peanut butter, and doing this over and over again, has things greatly improved. Now all we have to do is get her to stop getting into everything while I'm working, we'll be just fine! PS - This community is great. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

Lovely photos, so glad your pack is accepting of the "new puppy". I feel that if you just expect basenjis to be good, they will be!

@Capt_Jack_our_Basenji: THANK!!! And OH YES time does fly…i dont want him to get bigger.... My first baby is 20. That's TWENTY YEARS OLD!!! How the blazes did THAT happen? LOL. My last baby will be 9 –NINE!!!!! -- in a couple of weeks. Yikes! I know people always say, "enjoy them while they're young; they grow up before you know it", which is true, but there's no way to really appreciate that fact until it's too late! You are so busy with the day to day, you just don't notice that suddenly your infant is packing to move out! But there is so much fun to come! By this time next year, he'll be walking!! and beginning to talk!!! THAT is so much fun! You DO want those fun days to come also. But I know these infancy days are so special -- so snuggly and warm. {and tiring! ;) } I understand there's a part of you that would love it to last forever.

@Tayda_Lenny: So y'all know I have had issues with Lenny being ultra agressive at the dog park. I'm in between jobs now, so I thought it'd be a good time to bring Lenny and Tayda to the dog park when there is no one there, maybe get him used to the smells and perhaps one or two other dogs. So today was our first try. We were alone for about 5 minutes and then a britney spaniel came in. She was really submissive - I guess that was good for our situation. As she was getting in through the gate I was holding Lenny and Tayda, then I let Tayda go, and then Lenny after that. He started to chase and nip at the britney for a few minutes, and then he let up. From that point he didn't really pay a lot of attention to her. She went into the water to escape and wouldn't come out. She came out a few times, and he would chase her, but it was more of a playing chase, rather than a "i'm gonna kill that dog chase" So it seems like Lenny had this initial urge to establish his dominance, and then once he accomplished that, he didn't care much. Any hints on how to get him to ease up at the beginning? Overall I think it was promising. The britney left cause the owner couldnt get her to come out of the water, and then we were alone again for another 20 minutes or so and then I left with them as well. Tayda, as usual, played a little, and then just sunbathed. :) I totally understand where you are coming from. Dash is the same way. I was watching Ceasar one day and he mentioned that dog parks are a lot of high energy which can rile your dog up. I have noticed that with Dash too. As soon as we get to the park he races in 90 miles/hr to the first meanest, biggest dog he can find and bites at him. To combat that we actually have cut back a lot at the park and are just walking him more. But when we do go we try to use the small dog section to wear him out a little. For some reason the small dogs don't seem to be dominant towards him. Once he is a little tired and used to the park we switch over to the large dog section. He is not nearly as bad.

My husband thinks the baby gate for our B is silly so I don't think i can talk him into the $100 playpen plus our B is too active, it won't be able to stay in place. I can see it already collapsing.
