I tricked them into sleeping in their crate!!

Basenji Talk
  • So I figured out a way to trick the dogs into sleeping in their crate (with the door open!) I have been struggling with them sleeping on my bed… which would be fine if they weren't so fidgety all night. Originally i elevated their bed so that they would be at the same height as me, which is what I thougt the issue was, since they always seem to try to be as high as possible. Usually they sleep on their bed at first and then sometime in the middle of the night they climb under my covers and push me out of the way.

WELL - I got rid of the bed and put a crate in the bedroom on top of the heat vent! Once the tray in the crate warmed up, they were trying to push each other out of the way to get the best spot in the crate! HA! The door to the crate is open all night and they just stayed in there! I also put a dog bed on top of the crate so that they can sit up there and look out the window if they want... which they did for a while before getting in the crate!

Yay! I outsmarted them! (for now)

  • Great idea! Thanks for sharing - good tip!

  • HA HA!! That's too funny! All this time they just wanted the warmth not you ;) Good for you :D

  • Darn it, this won't work for me, my heat vents are in the ceiling! Great idea though.

I was interested to see this post. I have currently 2 B. gals, Tootsie and Peanut. Tootsie by day is a yodeling lunatic, but sleeps like a rock. Peanut, on the other hand is mostly silent, except for an occasional growl when needed, and has been that way for the 4 years we've had her. About 3 or 4 times in the past year, though, we will wake up to the most mournful, creepy howl I've ever heard.. Pea 'sleep howling' I guess you'd call it! It truly sounds a bit "other worldly" and it always makes me hope she isn't having a really bad doggie dream!

Interestingly enough, there has recently been a discussion about crates on the CleanRun list. CR is working on obtaining some high end crates to sell. Everything CR sells is tested by the CR staff. I am not sure how they are going to crash test these crates, but I am anxious to see them. I have a feeling they may be the solid metal (Al?) crates I've seen that are VERY expensive, but we'll seel I have used Kennel Aire crates in my van for years. Why Kennel Aire? http://www.newworldbasenjis.net/kennelaire.htm I also like that the KA crates have one inch squares. That makes it harder to suck things into the crate. @tanza: The problem being the Basenji that chews through the seat belt harness in 30seconds or less. So hence the muzzle Yep, I happen to know for a fact that one of the most expensive things on a 73 VW bug is the seatbelt! For those having problems with getting your dog in a crate, I believe Susan Garrett's Crate Games talks about that. I think it's at the end of the dvd.

@Lenora: He sounds pretty typical basenji to me Cheryl. They want to be where you, and make themselves completely comfortable on you. Abbey used to be a terrible mouther when she was little (she's 3 now) and I taught her No Bite. Kiss. When she'd start to mouth at my hand or whatever, I'd say No Bite, Kiss, and she would give me a little lick instead. I too use the No Bite, Kisses and he is getting there. If he gets too rough, I just pull away and ignore him, it doesn't take long before he will reach over and give a gentle kiss. I am having so much fun with him. He is the most loving dog I have ever owned and we are learning lots from each other. Yesterday he "saved" me from the UPS truck! He saw it pull up outside on the curb and he set off with a series of barks that hit a pitch that hurt! Of course once he saw the man get out, he was all wiggles and wanting to play with him. :)

All three pups sleep in bed with us. We bought two double beds and stuck them togeather so we could all fit. It's still crowded. My next dog IS going to sleep in a crate!
