Runny nose, sneezing?

  • @lustopher - Could be either, I never give Kennel cough unless you are going to a boarding or day care that requires it. There are so many strains of kennel cough and the vaccine only covers a few of them. So even if you had vaccinated him, he still could have gotten Kennel Cough. The fact that he is lethargic could be due to the shots they gave him. Did they do blood work? That would be important, in my opinion. And possibility that there have been any gardening done where you take him? Could it be that the grounds were treated?

  • If it hasn't happened before, it could well be an allergy to the pollen that is around at this time of year. I don't inoculate against kennel cough for the same reasons @tanza doesn't. If not the emergency vet, your own one should have done blood work.

I have had one instance of something similar. Driving up to Scotland to a show in early May with a friend and her Basenjis as well as my own. No sooner were we across the border than one of hers starting sneezing and developed lumps and bumps the first time we stopped to let them pee.

It continued the three part-days we were in Scotland (up one day, show the next, leave for home the next) but both of us always carried Piriton with us - a mild anti-hayfever remedy for humans - basically chlorphenamine maleate - which Basenjis also find helpful. On this occasion it did help that particular dog.

Lumps disappeared as soon as we were back in England - so I am sure this instance was grass related

  • It doesn't have to be cut grass - this time of year there is pollen in the air. Some of my (human) family suffer runny noses and weepy eyes now for a month or so.

@debradownsouth The ASPCA is a horrible organization for all animals. Every time legislation is introduced to Ban Horse Slaughter they get in touch with the Reps and Senators and kill the bill. They started by protecting Carriage Horses in New York City but those Carriage Horses are still there suffering. With Dogs they commit fraud with their TV Commercials. They say they are a no kill shelter but they outsource the killing. I did my own investigation into them at the Headquarters on the Upper East Side in Manhattan. I went every day after work for 2 weeks and said I was interested in a small dog. I told them which dog I was interested in but the day after that the dog was gone. It had not been adopted because they said the little Dog was vicious! It was not. they give the Dogs and Cats 7 Days and then they transfer them to a facility that has one purpose: to Euthanize Dogs and Cats. The oils are so diluted that there is no danger of them being made ill. My Mom is a Nurse and we had one Cat who lived to be 25 years old. She knows what she is doing. ASPCA is not a good source because they lie and defraud their donors. A

We did a biopsy a week into it and it was not cancerous, so waiting for the bump to go away was the only other option. I though surgery would be too intrusive in the nose area. Kiya had to endure two weeks of wearing the cone day and night to prevent her from scratching her nose. She seems to get all kinds of things around her nose, just recently she got bitten by a bee nosing around in the grass and was back into the cone for a week.

It's very possible something has started growing that she has a slight allergy to. My Gemma sneezes when we first go into the fields in the morning lately because everything is coming up and it's dewy as well. She also did this during pollen season, but seldom any other time. Of course our A/C is always on because the days are so hot now, and that may be the answer for you. If she had something up her nose, I think she would be "blowing" trying to get it out, but a vet visit would answer that for you.

No dog is perfect. If the male you are looking at has a lot of great qualities in looks, character and in health, and he compliments your female well, I wouldn't worry about the light nose or eyes. Yes, the pups could inherit them, so that's a choise you will have to make :) I wouldn't exclude a nice male from breeding only based on the colour of his eyes…

It could also be something called "nose mites" in swedish it´s something they can get at indoor dogshows or otherkinda close contact to dog´s affected with it.This reverse sneezing is one of the most typical symtoms. They treat it here with either a med called stronghold or interceptor pills. Might be an idea to ask your vet to test the dog . If a dog has this he shouldn´t meet other dog´s as it´s very contagious.I read on a swedish dogforum about this and it also said that you could vaccinate them with Ivomec S.
