Basenji screams when moving bowels

  • I have recently became the owner of a young basenji female. Over the past two days she has been screaming when she poops. I took her to the vet and there was nothing obvious wrong. The vet said that her rectum prolapses slightly when she goes to the bathroom and I should wipe her with baby wipes and put vaseline her her bottom. Tonight there was a tiny bit of bleeding. Has anyone ever had similar problems?? The vet did not find anal sac issues or constipation, no sign of parasites. It just seems strange to me. Its really upsetting when she cries like that.

  • Sorry I don't have any experience with this. Joey a few times screamed when he peed, but in 3 months, it hasn't occurred again. Hope you get some answers.

  • how old? is the poop hard?

  • She is about a year old. I thought her stool seemed harder than usual, from the looks of it. Anyway, I've been using a little metamucil in her food which is what the vet suggested. It has worked for the most part. Although the other day I found part of a broken glass figurine (Christmas ornament) under the sofa. I'm wondering if she ate the missing piece which could've caused some internal injury. I'm thinking of getting vet insurance. I see problems down the road.

  • You might want to try giving her a little pumpkin paste. It will soften her stool and they like to eat it too (the pumpkin I mean) :)
Vet insurance is a great thing to consider. I have it and love it. Check out www.sheltercare.com
It's accepted by all vets. Ive been using them for over 4 years and have had no problems.
Good luck and I hope your little girl gets better soon

  • Personally I would take my baby to another vet, 2 opinions are good to have. I do know that the pumpkin is good for hard bowels and they do like it. Keep us posted, I couldn't stand to hear my baby cry, she has me hook line and sinker haha

  • The only time mine did this was when she was spayed and in going to the bathroom, she strained the area that had been stitched. :( I hope yours gets better!

I agree with Buddys Pal… if they didn't do either urinalysis or xray, I'd get them done. If you have a sick dog and the vet just sort of says "oh well, blood work looks okay".. may be time for a new vet. Something is obviously wrong.

Kipawa's skirt - it isn't big, but I actually love running my fingers over it. :)

Yes, Spencer is much better now, but he is still very thin. He lost six pounds. Even strong antibiotics cannot fight a severe abscess. I'm sure your vet found and resolved the problem under anesthesia, so that should put Egyn over the hump. SubQs and a few weeks of antiobiotics will hopefully get him back on the road to health. I had to feed Spencer critical care dog food through a syringe for several days after the surgery, then make him special soft food– the aforementioned meatballs-- for weeks after that. Good luck to you-- and positive thoughts to Egyn!

I saw that you have a sewing machine – its not hard to make your own coat. I made one for my previous beasties with fleece and wool. I made it with a high colar (for the backside of the neck) and an indentation for the tail and a big belly and chest band (I used snaps at first but then switched to velcro). It worked pretty good for our single digit temps (and the occasional below zero walks to the corner). My current beastie refuses to go out the door with a coat on, however. When the outside temps are below 10F she won't stay outside any longer than necessary to go potty - the squirrels can run around all they want then! With respect to booties, mine will at least tolerate them when we go for walks but it's more for the road salt. However, the good pair I bought this year leak somehow (maybe through the stitching?) and she doesn't like them with they get wet inside. Nevertheless be sure you get the best you can find.

Yes–I forgot that there are actually homeopathic vets available. We are so lucky here in the Bay Area--we have great vets, specialists and also UC Davis veterinary school/drs not too far away--and believe me--I have used all of these resources over the past 18 years.....
