Puppy randomly screaming while playing

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hey y’all. Not sure if I’ve just got a dramatic puppy (14 weeks) or not but figured I’d get some opinions. There’s been three times now over the past month where our puppy will be playing and be doing little rolls on the ground but she will randomly come up screaming like her leg is caught in a bear trap and take off running while screaming. Then after about 10 seconds she stops. I hold her for a bit, put her down and she’s off like normal. Is this normal at all or do I need to get her to a vet for a checkup?

  • I have seen this before with all my dogs, both puppy and adult. My current B will occasionally jump down off the chair and Yelp for no apparent reason. Maybe a muscle pain or something but it's never caused any problems.

Having said that, it doesn't happen that often and your pup is young so I would grab a vet check just in case.

  • Hello,

I would get his spine and neck checked as something may be out of alignment or slipped. I once had a pup that experienced internal neck swelling post vaccination- not common. Not visible. It was something that would easily get exacerbated if he was bumped or fell. Eventually the swelling went down with anti inflammatories and later dog chiropractic. Hopefully it’s not this but it would be good to check out with X-ray. Good luck.

  • It's possible that she tweaks a muscle when she does the acrobatics. I wouldn't worry unless she starts favoring a leg or cries out every time she takes a step. If that happens -- go see a Vet!

  • Probably nothing to worry about - just over energetic - but do make sure. Anything out of the ordinary, especially with a puppy, go to the Vet.

  • @dedes9 - Sounds like it could be an issue with the patella. I would suggest a Vet visit to have them check that out. Here is a link you can read about it. While it is not a big issue with Basenjis it does show up... https://www.ofa.org/diseases/other-diseases/patellar-luxation

@chewy1 Seeka is bathed regularly due her swimming and rolling in sand at the park daily, besides she sleeps in the bed with us. We put 1 tsp of Optima 365 in her dry food daily. Vet recommended. Takes care of her dandruff.

If you don't trust the vets you are seeing, please get her to a university vet for a second opinion. Have you talked to any of the other owners of the litter, or is she a rescue? When kennel cough is really bad, it can take months to clear up and the cough go away. She could also have allergies affecting her at night.. where does she sleep? Can you change where she sleeps to see if it's better?

Pat do you know why umbilical herina's are so common in B's??? It probably has no bearing but if you can't get there and cut the cord - fast - Mom will put a paw firmly in the pup's tum, grab the cord in her mouth and WRENCH. However, in my not unlimited experience, those are the worst umbilical hernias. Chezz had a habit of dropping pups - splat- onto the pavement outside the back door when she went out to pee. I well remember carrying Trouble back indoors, still attached when Chezz decided to take a hand before I could grab the utensils. Trouble has a huge fatty lump but which makes absolutely no difference to her. We've never had one fixed - spw

Glory has been with me almost two months - she is a little over 3 months old. I have switched her from a puppy food that was high in beef which she was eating when she came to us to a food that has chicken and vegetables. The soft stool doesn't bother her - there is never a sense of urgency to go - she only has a soft stool about twice maybe three times a day. She has gained almost 9 pounds since she came to us - she was very underweight and very young. Right now she weighs just under 16 pounds. We're doing stool testing every 2 weeks and except for the very first test, they are coming back O.K. I'm concerned that she may not be processing the nutrition from her food or that she will have chemical imbalances because of the loose stools. Am I worrying for nothing?

how big is the lump? it could be as simple as a pore clogged with oil. it can feel like a cyst and by massaging it you can get it to head over time. Or try a warm wash cloth. Shot reactions, like they said, are on the shoulder blades. Caesar has a reaction to a shot and his shoulder blew up to a softball size. The vet tech that gave a shot didnt insert it in the correct manner and it dissolved with time and a Benadryl shot. Does your pup react when you touch it like it might hurt? What size is it? When Cairo was being neutered the vet pulled two teeth (canine and molar) that were not completely out or pushed out by the new teeth. They didnt charge me that much because he was already asleep. This is a great time for them to inspect and fix anything. They charged me $50 for pulling a baby canine that didnt come out and a molar that was on its way out.
